“okay, okay, i give up!” grace gasped between giggles as she finally surrendered the remote control to yasmin. “you win, just stop tickling me! and for the love of god, no reality tv, please.”

grace had never thought of herself as an idiot — in fact, she normally prided herself on her intellect, at the risk of sounding stuck-up — but her situation with holly was making her doubt that. they’d decided to stay friends, to bury the feelings that neither of them seemed able to fully deny, and at first it was...fine. sort of. but now holly was seeing someone, some asshole who always had an arm around her as if she was his property, and it made grace want to puke. they were at a party, surrounded by friends, but the sight of holly entwined with someone else was grating on her nerves, so she snuck off to a secluded balcony to mope in private. she’d always avoided alcohol and drugs, not wanting to end up like her bio mom or brother, but she’d honestly never been more tempted to numb the pain. she heard a noise behind her and turned, face twisting in an attempt at a smile. “hey. enjoying the party?”

“little boyfriend?” grace’s eyebrows knitted. “he’s 6’4, roman, he’s not exactly little.” she shook her head, sitting down beside him. “what is this really about?”

grace hadn’t seen leroy in person since his music had blown up, and she wasn’t complaining. the two of them had never really gotten along, and she’d quietly suspected for some time, while their mutual friends buzzed over his success, that fame would go to his head. and it appeared she was right.
“you know, that was really shitty of you.” she’d followed him to a quieter room, clutching her drink, although she hardly needed the liquid courage — she’d never been afraid to call anyone out, including him. famous or not. “andrew’s actually a really nice person, and he like, genuinely admires you. and he wasn’t even being annoying or weird about it, so...what the fuck? just because you’re a big star now, doesn’t mean you have to be a complete asshole to people.”

the familiar sound of her door creaking open would normally have startled her from her slumber, but tonight grace was wide awake. the news of the prima ballerina’s accident had shaken them all, but for some reason it left her in particular feeling uneasy. maybe it was because she’d secretly wished for the girl’s downfall so many times in the past, or maybe it was because it could so easily happen to her. either way, she was expecting star’s arrival. turning over onto her side, she moved the sheets back to allow the other to crawl in bed beside her. cars honked and sirens blared outside, the sounds of the city dulled only slightly by the old, thin walls of the ballet academy dormitories. “couldn’t sleep?”

“it’s really no big deal,” grace insisted, “it’s just one week. i just — i can’t stand all my family’s comments any longer. if they think we’re dating, at least they’ll finally leave me alone.” she bit her lip. “please?”

grace felt like an idiot. her expression betrayed her annoyance, but it was with herself, not venus. at least, mostly. “i thought — i thought i was the one who took the hint.” she let out a little exhale of something resembling amusement. “wow. we got our wires crossed, didn’t we?” someone bumped her shoulder and she glanced at them, but quickly her eyes returned to the blonde. almost as if she was afraid the other might just vanish into thin air. again. “i was so sure you were ignoring me. i’m sorry, v.”
