some more good second wave worship
I recently said to a friend they don't make black metal with the OG vibes these days. You know, the old school stuff. Sure, there's still influences everywhere but the stuff these days doesn't have the same energy. (Note how I didn't say "anymore". The genre as a whole developing a bit away from its roots is a good, healthy thing in my opinion.) Anyway, Kekht Arakh picks up the vibes of the old stuff and adds his own take on it and Pale Swordsman is one of the best albums of the recent years IMO. It's really cool to have the riffing and the energy of the old school stuff but with better sound and none of the satanist themes, which seem dull and corny to me these days.
Thenomancy takes it a bit further and just does the old school stuff with much less of their own take on it. And damn, does it slap! Lots of Aske and maybe some early Darkthrone in there. I'm a sucker for this clear, straight-forward riffing. And "Like Icicles, I Too Shall Fall" is probably my favourite song title in black metal ever.
Two bands specifically returning to the old school vibes rather recently, and both of the artists being rather young... might that be a trend? I could do with a little bit of a retro angle on black metal.
