So I cracked open my old Inanna book (by Diane Wolkstein and Samuel Noah Kramer; page 60) and saw this.
"She was told: 'Quiet, Inanna, the ways of the underworld are perfect. They may not be questioned.'"
It occurs to me that in the monomyth, the Hero is usually confronted by a Threshold Guardian who is intent on upholding the social rules (etiquette) of the enclosed community which the Hero is trying to escape---if that enclosed community is the Hero's home. But here, Inanna is trying to enter into the underworld which is not her home.
Oh, wait. There are a lot of anime that involve the Hero confronting Threshold Guardians, guarding a space that the Hero is trying to penetrate (vs escape from). So I guess this isn't so weird.
