Hey, during our discourse about the Dark Triad and how those traits can be seen in Starfighter characters, I remember you saying it can be applied to Commander Cook. If not him, then it had to be Bering. How so?

From what I’ve read, those with DT normally put on a sort of show, which is to say they’ll present themselves with eye-catching smiles, clothes, mannerisms, things that’ll get people to approach them. Now, that’s not to say they won’t show their “darker” sides. They show that just enough to intrigue people, and that’s where the “bad boy” idea comes in.

this was the part from your reply that stuck out to me. because cook is a lot more deceptive and cunning than cain is and we’ve seen that, in the comic, he tends to gravitate toward younger men, often those he can influence because he holds a position of power (whether that’s part of the appeal for him, i cannot say, but probably). and we know that cook/bering aren’t good men either since they’re part of project thebes, which is perilous to our main character, so cook and/or bering using those techniques or being subtle in their approach to get people to become part of their shady plan would seem to fit the qualifications that you described for the “classic” bad boy, or antagonist if you will. cook obviously has to be charming enough to get these recruits to sleep with him and bering i’m sure has a silver tongue or something that he can use to hold people like cain over. i’m not sure if i’m articulating myself well enough, i’m kind of exhausted and sick and just now got to sit down to relax. but, yeah, that’s what stuck out to me when you mentioned that because it made me think about how different cain and cook/bering are to their approaches in regards to project thebes.

Have you ever stumbled upon asocialconstruct's Basic series? If you haven't, it's a Starfighter story spanning over 13 parts, not counting the 14th one b/c it's the whole thing in one go. If you asked me, from what I can grasp, I'd say that it does an interesting job with Cain's character, particularly with how he manages to progress with his life. The backstory—given I'm thinking of the right fic—is also neat, too.

i don’t read a lot of fic in the fandoms that i tend to write in (i have this perpetual fear that i’ll absorb things without meaning to), but i have glossed her fic a few times on ao3 and, obviously it is incredibly well written and her writing style is phenomenal, but the themes which are covered in her fic and her characterization of cain in particular--though appropriate for the time--are not exactly my cup of tea. i appreciate the recommendation, though, and that you thought to let me know!

I was reading your Argument For Praxis article, and as you were talking about Cain and the points about him that Praxis highlights (i.e. his bad points), I thought of a sociological term: The Dark Triad (DT for short here). Narcissism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism are the traits seen in someone who has DT. That someone is also very good at deception, hiding those traits by looking the best and giving off an air of confidence, which attracts people. Do you think DT applies to Cain?

ohhhh, that’s a great point! i’d actually never heard of this until you mentioned it, but taking a cursory glance at the wikipedia page for DT, i think those three personality traits could definitely be applied to cain!

narcissism: in the beginning of the comic, yes. i think this could definitely apply to cain. he has an inflated view of himself, struts his stuff and is very much the “alpha dog” of the pack. at least at the beginning, and through the flashbacks we’ve seen. thinks he’s capable of seducing abel because, well, it’s him. though i think he becomes less so as the comic goes on, probably near the end of chapter three and the beginning of four, when his character is slightly retconned into this softer, tamer version of his chapter one and two self.

psychopathy: absolutely. again, at the beginning, he feels nothing for anyone else but himself, including his only friend “deimos”. is incredibly selfish, refuses to let anyone touch or be near abel, though is decidedly less so when they start sharing a bed. impulsive? most definitely. picking fights, spur of the moment sex, invading abel’s spaces to assert himself (cafeteria scene) and their relationship. praxis wasn’t wrong with this one.

machiavellianism: for sure. absolutely this one. cain’s entire thing is that he uses other people for personal gain. deimos, abel, they’re pawns to him, at least initially. in a way he’s probably using bering to get back to mars, too, but he’s not exactly the brightest bulb in the box so. we’ll see how far that plan goes.

MinKou #20-23

20- Who would be the mother/father figure?

Lmao they are both the father figure but Koujaku is def more "motherly" than Mink is mostly cause he's def his mothers child and pretty much imitates her when with their child. Mink points this out and Koujaku can do nothing but blush and say something like "Well better her than me" and Mink assures Koujaku that he's a good parent in his own way

21- Who stays up late helping with homework?

Miiink! Koujaku just doesn't have the patience or ends up not understanding jack shit("When did school get this hard?! Just... Go ask you're other father...."). Mink is actually hella good  at teaching and doesn't care how long it takes 

22- Who takes over the beauty/style department?

Ehehehehe bro Koujaku for sure. Mink would have a lot of the exact same boring clothes cause he doesn't care. Koujaku refuses to look anything but amazing. Koujaku is all kinds of distressed about how little Mink cares about beauty and style

23- Which partner takes the kid(s) to more outings?

Oh gosh I think they would both do outings together but Mink more so because he loves teaching their child  about nature, his heritage, and other important things about the land and what not. The two often come home covered in dirt and dead tired so Koujaku has to watch over them while they clean up so they don't drown in the tub from having fallen asleep while washing up.

Okay, so imagine that Fox Man receives a giant Snickers bar for Christmas from his brother, but when Shirasu asks him what he got him, he's like, "Oh... crap," and he begins a search for his twin's Christmas gift.

"Merry Christmas, Brother."

Kotarou stared in awe at the gift his brother placed in his hands. It was huge, and that shape, could it be…? He tore the paper to reveal the giant Snickers bar within.

"I know how you’ve been searching for something like this, so I thought it was perfect!"

"Brother…" Kotarou stared at the sacred item in his grasp disbelievingly. There really were no words. “Thank you.”

Shirasu just chuckled, obviously pleased with his reaction. There was a moment of expectant silence as he watched his brother admire his gift, but as the silence stretched he started to feel a little awkward. He cleared his throat to get his brother’s attention, and when he finally tore his eyes away from the (giant) Snickers bar, eyes a little misty, Shirasu held his hands up to him in supplication. "And for me?"

Outwardly, his expression didn’t change, but inside, Kotarou felt a sense of panic. Oh, crap. Despaired as he had been over his inability to receive the oh so revered confectionery, he’d completely forgone obtaining a gift for his own brother. And now here he was, his own gift tightly gripped to his chest, and his brother, with that a small smile, waiting expectantly for his own gift. With a sick feeling in his gut, Kotarou once again looked down at the bar in his arms.

"Brother, are you me?" He repeated the question they'd shared between them since their childhood, his voice low.

"I am...?" Shirasu's voice trailed off, making his response sound like more of a question than a retort.

Kotarou drew in a slow breath. "If I am you, and you are me, then... this gift is also yours." With a sudden flash, the Snickers bar was sliced perfectly in half and, with a final resolved look, he offered one half to Shirasu, who accepted it wordlessly. "So... Merry Christmas, Brother!"

Bonus: Shirasu's reaction: 눈_눈 "u fuckin' serious, bro?"

#12 and Minkou... please.

writer and editor au (I’m sooo sorry this took me so long)

Koujaku loves writing and everything about it. He loves story building, when the words just flowed from his mind to the page, he loves his characters even the minor ones. What Koujaku hates about writing is his editor.

Mink.

He’s a total hardass and nothing is ever good enough for him. It seems that no matter what Koujaku writes there’s always something terribly wrong. It could be anything between “I don’t like that comma there” or “This character is beyond painful to read about Red.”

That’s another thing that pisses Koujaku off. They’ve been working together for almost 4 months now and Mink has yet to use Koujaku’s actual name. Even when they greeted each other for the first time Mink called him Red.

It sucks but Koujaku loves writing too much to just stop because of Mink. Koujaku grumbles a bit as he rolls over to look at his clock. It’s almost time to head over to meet his editor and that puts him in an even worse mood. With a heavy sigh Koujaku pushes himself up and crawls out of bed.

The worst part about having Mink as his editor is he gives you nothing to go on. If he likes something or hates it you’ll never know. He never smiles and his face is almost constantly at a frown so that’s nothing to go off. His eyebrows never move his eyes never show anything other than concentration.

It used to be nerve wrecking but now it’s just frustrating to be honest. Koujaku fiddles around on his coil while Mink reads what he has to offer until the he hears the click of Mink’s glasses in his desk.

"So what do I have to change now?" Koujaku flat out asks. Mink raises an eyebrow at him and hands Koujaku his work back.

"Actually nothing. This is very well written and I’m impressed with this… Koujaku." Mink answers before giving Koujaku a small smile.

Correction.

What Koujaku now hates is how badly a simple smile and use of his first name from Mink can get his heart racing and face blushing.
