MERLIN had always been an early riser, it was SECOND NATURE to him. Restless slumber meant he’d be up early, but COHABITATION had seemed to have trained that habit out of him. BUT WITH as long as they’ve known each other, and for as long as they’ve LIVED together, Merlin had come to realize that the ROUTINE Arthur had fallen into seemed to be a comfort for him. 

EVERY MORNING, he’d wake up, trudge out of bed and take a shower, then he’d make his way into the kitchen and make himself some coffee before he would start his day. It was so methodical it was almost insane to him. Merlin had always suspected that Arthur liked regimented schedules but this simply confirmed it.

EVENTUALLY, Merlin had taken it upon himself to aid the process, and thus began the new part of the routine in which Merlin would make the coffee and by the time Arthur had emerged from his shower, the coffee was already waiting for him. No need to take that extra step. He’s washing off the dishes from last night’s dinner as he glances at Arthur entering the room, a small grin of amusement forming at his lips when Arthur mentions being beaten to the punch once again.

“You can certainly try, but I’m a quick study I’m afraid. So eventually I’ll end up making it before you get up to do so–––”

HE CANTS his head to the side idly, resting his forearms against the sink as he shuts the water off, exchanging a glance with Arthur before drying hands off and approaching, taking his mug from his side of the table and approaching Arthur. A small gentle kiss to his cheek before he takes a seat, SIP of coffee and delight as he suddenly feels rejuvenated.

XIII. Death — Describe a time where your muse felt like they lost a major part of their life.

Aside from the obvious, which would be the day Arthur ‘died’, the only other time I can really think of is when Merlin left Scotland. There’s a number of different reasons why this is, but the most notable is that it was the very first time Merlin was GENUINELY without people in his life acting as a support system. With the Faeries, he had them guiding him on how to use his magic properly, and after he left the faeries, he went back to his clan. He always support coming from somewhere, when he left Scotland to journey to Camelot & fulfill his ‘destiny’ & his vision, he was ALONE. 

To make matters worse, it was a completely different world he stepped into. Sure he had someone teach him how to survive in court, but until he & Arthur actually became friends, Merlin was very much alone. He was kind of up the creek without a paddle and he just kinda had to deal with it, because the alternative was just sinking. WITH TIME of course he eventually kinda came to terms with it, and eventually he gained another support system in the form of Arthur & Morgan but beyond that he didn’t really have anyone for that kinda transitional period.

Arthur had a habit of LETTING his inflections get the better of him, MASKING emotions was hard for a man SO PASSIONATE as him, but Merlin plays along, TAKING a seat across from him, HANDS folded together resting on the wooden table before him as he cants his head to the side.

“You’ve something on your mind then?”

HE’S inclined to say he’s known Arthur long enough at this point to KNOW when he was troubled by something, THE WAY his face seems to CONTORT, trying to figure out how he feels. RESPONSES varied on how people felt about it. Morgan usually said it made her WORRY because she thought he’d short circuit if he thought too hard. 

AS FOR GUINEVERE, the last he ever heard her say of such things was that Arthur’s WORRIES were so OFTEN brought into their personal interactions that it was HARD to figure when she’d have time for him to be present.

“Speak your peace then, I am here and I am listening.”

RARE was it for someone to so THOROUGHLY and WHOLE-HEARTEDLY garner Merlin’s attention this way, for as long as he could REMEMBER, he grew bored of the antics of others, BUT there was something so ENGAGING about him. KING ARTHUR. THE GREATEST ruler who ever shall live. There would be NO OTHER to walk this earth who could DO THIS TO HIM. 

Manage to reign in such a DETACHED state as Merlin’s, but he’d sworn fealty to Arthur when they’d first met, and he’s upheld that allegiance, HE’LL do so for as long as they both live. And he does, nodding as he studies Arthur’s expression, the FAINTEST phantom of a smile curling at the corner of his lips. SMALL ENCOURAGEMENT for him. FOR HIM AND ONLY HIM.
