OKAY GUYS I’VE THOUGHT OF THIS! (I apologize to both @whiskeyeyedcullen and @kagetsukai now.)
Trevelyan’s family is very devout, and she grows up learning to respect the templars. She watches some of her brothers become templars, and longs to follow in their footsteps. Protect people, as they do. So she trains to be a warrior, and trains with them. She wants to be like them, more than anything in the world. Protect as they do.
She meets Cullen in the Inquisition, former templar. She’s heard stories about him, how he stood up to Meredith. She knows how he helped Kirkwall rebuild after everything that happened. In Haven she surprises him by asking about the templars, and what the Order is really about. He thinks that everyone despises the Order and what it has become at this point, yet there is she, still admiring it. There is she, that knows of the good the templars are capable of.
He sees her run out of Haven’s chantry, willing to lay down her life to protect everyone else. Yes, she is everything the Order should be, brave, and sacrificing. He falls in love with her. They kiss on the battlements. This is his woman, and nothing can tear them apart. He knows it that day.
Then, she comes to him, and tells him that she wants to learn.
He is adamant. He makes no bones of telling her he doesn’t want her to. “It’s not an easy life, and you needn’t take on more,” he says. But her eyes plead with him to understand. And he does understand, because he had that desire and drive once in his life, before the Blight, and before Kirkwall. Before the disillusions happened. He looks at her and sees how he used to be.
He loves her so he will not deny her this dream. He knows, but still, he won’t. He won’t. This is her choice to make, not his.
He trains her himself. Teaches her how to dispel and drain mana, even if he no longer can. He is there when she takes her first draught of lyrium. He winces when she does, remembering when he was chained to the blue vial. Winces when he knows that she too will be chained to it, slavishly obedient to the call. But he still loves her. He supports her, just as she supports him, and understands when he is at his breaking point. When he tells her he isn’t sure he can endure the nightmares and memories, she tells him he can. She tells him he doesn’t need the vial. This is what he wants, the direct opposite of what she must do, but she supports him. Respects his decisions. He does the same.
He can feel it, every time they kiss. He can feel the hum. The call.
But he loves her, and he will not leave her. He loves her more than life. Still, she takes it. She takes it, and every night he prays that she will be able to endure. Endure the chains that the blue vial bring. Every night he prays that the blue vial will not take her away from him.
He prays. He prays.
