Monday, March 2: Throwdown, "Widowed"

That Deathless was more Down than Pantera, or at least found a middle ground between the two, came as a bit of a relief after so many years of Dave Peters and an ad hoc cast of players aping Phil Anselmo to the point of parody.  So “Widowed” might not have been very original but at least Throwdown didn’t sound so consumed with boasting about their toughness.  This was actually one of the doomier and more epic tracks in the band’s discography, and Peters chesty baritone reminded of Anselmo’s bluesy howl on Down’s Over the Under (which incidentally contained arguably Anselmo's finest vocal performance outside Pantera).  Yes, Phil Anselmo was still a point of comparison, but Throwdown proved themselves rather adapt at evolving their approach somewhat, and “Widowed” played like an actual song rather than a tiresome barrage of platitudes.
