On 15 October 1997 a British jet-propelled car by the name of Thrust SSC broke the World Land Speed Record in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, USA. Breaking the sound barrier twice, the vehicle set an average speed record of 763.035 mph (1227.985 km/h) - between the north and south runs - a record which still stands. 

Today a British educational project aiming to inspire a generation of future engineers is at work on a successor, aiming to break the 1000 mph barrier. That vehicle is the Bloodhound SSC.
