Today's Meditation:

Most of us would like to be known as a generous person, and there is nothing wrong with that. In fact, I believe it says a lot about our purpose--what our souls truly desire in life. Deep within we understand that our time here on Earth is meant to help make a positive difference in the lives of others, to make this world a better place because we have been born into it, and to help bring others home as we journey there ourselves--all of which requires great generosity. Unfortunately, such reputations cost something to develop--time, money, effort, and sacrifice--things that not all of us are willing or perhaps even able to part with to gain the distinction of being a generous individual.

And yet we all have the ability to be generous in small ways by sharing anything and everything that we have--time, money, food, goods, compassion, wisdom, understanding... quite literally anything we possess that might go to help another's needs. But sharing is one thing, and being generous is another; generosity comes from the heart, and authentic generosity cares not about the returns of what is being given--recognition and praise, or compensation and reparation--nor does it care about the cost.

However, the desire to receive gratitude or recognition does not mean we are not generous people, rather, it means we still have more growing and becoming to experience in that area of our lives. True generosity is something that we work towards all of our lives. And as we grow, little by little we develop less interest in selfish returns for our generosity, and more interest in selfless returns.

If we wish to have a reputation for generosity, we must earn it--we must learn to give authentically, with all our heart and without the expectation of receiving anything in return. Then we will begin to earn a reputation for generosity, which will not come cheap.

Today's Challenge: Allow yourself to give from the heart today.

Questions to consider:

How do you define generous? Do you fit your definition?

How can we learn to give from our hearts in a spirit of true generosity?

What kinds of reputations can be bought "cheap?"
