Every once in a while I decide I'm really going to double down and do some serious studio landscapes, but I always get boggled by the amount of things I don't know and need to know to make the kind of landscape I want to paint. Plein air is easy, you just paint what's in front of you and it either works or it doesn't - but when you're trying to reconstruct something from memory and photos? So much brain work! What kind of trees were there? What were those grasses I remember? Where was the light coming from? What color was the dirt? Nevermind all the artistic problems of composition and value and stroke quality and color. Phew! But I guess if I get a little forwarder each time I get the itch, I'll get there eventually.
