Coin of the ancient Greek city of Thurii in Southern Italy, established in 446 or 443 BCE as Panhellenic colony by Athens and Pericles. According to the ancient sources the constitution and laws of Thurii have been written at Pericles’ request by the major sophist Protagoras of Abdera and Herodotus was among the first colonists (that’s why some ancient writers refer to him as Herodotus of Thurii and not Herodotus of Halicarnassus, his homeland).
