wandering on a small strip of steppe on the ridge of the schmücke hills 🌾🍂🍃 together with a few other ranges of hills it forms the northern border of the thuringian basin, overlooking it quite spectacularly. in medieval times shell lime was hewn up here and you can still find lots of traces from those activities all over the range. it's also a very dry grassland area where you can find rare plants and wild critters. unfortunately you will always hear the sounds of the nearby autobahn, which kind of destroys the tranquility a bit, but visiting is still worth it, especially because of the views, but also to roam around and hide in the stone pits. #thuringia #thuringianbasin #hillranges #kahleschmücke #schmücke #harras #landscapes (hier: Schmücke (Höhenzug)) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGzF9f6HwVU/?igshid=3g8yxq5n0i92

time to fill this space with autumnal pictures again - being on vacations means finally having time to enjoy my most favourite season of the year 🍁🍂 my family and i had a lovely little stroll around #schlossettersburg near weimar - in the #buchenwald woods. i have loved this place all of my life, coming back again and again ❤️ did you know that the buchenwald woods were also playing a rather nasty part in history? while on this side of the forest it can seem quite beautiful and tranquil, on the other side of it once stood the buchenwald concentration camp - a site that contributed to nazi war crimes in the second world war. that place is one of the most harrowing ones i've ever been to and always brings to mind that beauty and terror are never far apart from each other. #weimar #thuringia #thuringianbasin #autumn #nature #palaces #landscapes #ponds #rockfurniture (hier: Schloss Ettersburg) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGg7ZLPH4YA/?igshid=1u2520sg1jqnf

bike ride with my dad through the landscapes of my childhood & adolescence. i feel a little weird posting this because this photo means that i am currently visiting my parents for a few days. after almost two months of social distancing from them we decided to risk it and meet up again ( of course with hygiene rules still in order ). none of my family had any symptoms in the past weeks, so we figured we'd give it a try. it's also officially allowed for parents and their kids who live far away from each other to reconnect again, as long as you don't make a big family gathering out of it or start visiting your grandparents or people who are super high risk. another thing we considered is the fact that thuringia is a state where infections have been really low and also the state is not overpopulated. also i've been self quarantining from sunday to tuesday (had to head out for tire changes on wednesday which i combined with a pretty lonesome walk through nature afterwards). i thought that would minimize the possibility of getting infected as well and also to see whether there was any change in my health after working all this time in a still rather crowded environment. my parents have been doing the same and in my parent's house there's also plenty of space to keep distance so with all these considerations combined we thought it might be safe to try to see each other again. so here we are. spending some quality time together before i head back on sunday to face the chaos of the city again. and it's been so good to see their faces for real again, even without hugging and touching. it makes me a little bit more sane. #thuringia #bikerides #coronastatus #landscapes #thuringianbasin #thüringerbecken (hier: Schwansee, Thuringen, Germany) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_Wm26Jndfl/?igshid=eddim6xqaj78
