a snippet of THUSIA
Thusias hums thoughtfully. “To never lose anything… you have to keep all your love to yourself. That’s a bit sad, I think. Love is made to be shared.”

Thusias yelps in surprise, flailing his arms. The cat, startled, skitters away down the alley with a hiss.
“Aw, man… Did you have to scare the cat away? We were bonding.”
“I know for a fact that that was a druid.”
Thusias looks a little less upset, but still sceptical. “...how?”
“I’m allergic to cats. My eyes aren’t watering.”

“You’re stalling,” says Thusias. I snort.
“I suppose I am. Forgive me for not wanting to get my ass kicked for a second time.”
“One second of bravery, right?” says Thusias.
“...what?”
“Well… it only takes one second of bravery to open the door. Then you’re inside. You can deal with whatever comes next, but you’re past the first hurdle.”

A sound like a ringing bowl reverberates through the glass platform, echoing out into the dark. The dark sand below starts to churn and shift – it shimmers like moonlight over the ocean at night as it forms a whirlwind that reaches high above the glass platform. The nameless fiend cringes back, bracing for a face full of sand, but I stay put.
The top of the whirlwind peels outwards like a flower opening, revealing long black hair hundreds of feet long that pools in the air like ink, and a face wearing a long white blindfold. Amarantinos, serene death given form, stretches his massive arms over his head as his completely black skin writhes with oily shadows. He’s about twice as tall as the platform, so he kneels to make it level with his shoulders. Shimmering runes are etched into his skin, making him look like a living map of the stars.

A branch catches my foot, and I tug myself sharply out of its grasp with a huff. The plants here are rubbery and flexible, which means they don’t break when you run into them. It’s a pain in the ass to get untangled if you manage to get stuck in one.
“Are you… okay?” asks Thusias. The note of concern in his voice annoys me.
“I’m fine.”
“You’re not acting fine.”
“Yeah, well—” I kick a fallen branch off the walkway, and it skates smoothly off the edge. “Maybe I said that to get you to stop asking.”

“Hi! Um… Akhthos didn’t send me. He doesn’t know I’m here.”
Monos’ brow furrows as they consider my words. They’re not willing to let me in just yet.
“I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t want you to be here,” they say slowly.
“That’s why I didn’t tell him I was coming.”

A wooden board forming a walkway overhead cracks loudly, sending down a shower of red dust and splinters. I shoot out an arm in front of Thusias, who stops dead in his tracks a split second before the board above us breaks away and lands directly in front of Thusias with a crunch. We both look at each other in shock. I fight to keep a straight face, but Thusias snorts and the two of us burst into laughter.
