As Jon had been slipping into unconsciousness, he muttered “what fresh hell is this?”, completely prepared for something terrible to happen the moment he fell asleep.
Instead, he wakes up to what appears to be his old house, before they moved to Metropolis. He blinks back tears, surprised to see the old place. He hasn’t been here since they moved, and he had hated the move. He hears his mom talking and jumps up from his spot in the living room.
“Mom?? Mom! I’m home! I-” He stops, shocked speechless when he sees his mom, as well as a small baby. The baby looks like Jon, pushing around some toy making motor noises and wearing red overalls.
“Did you know I won a Pulitzer? That my credentials could get me an interview with anyone?” She asks the child affectionately. The boy just continues pushing his little toy around. “Of course, you know. Because you’re mommy’s big boy, aren’t you?”
Little Jon responds with more motor noises.
“Yes. And I love you, too.”
Jon sinks to his knees, a sad smile on his face as he struggles to breath. It was his mom, speaking to a younger version of him. He couldn’t remember this, since he had been too young to really remember, but he felt safe. Happy. His mom scoops up the child, explaining that she’s writing about a flower show and asking if it’s dopey. The child manages to say “op-eeee” in agreement as he’s picked up to answer the door.
“Peter...” Jon whispers. He could tell from his heartbeat who it was. For once, all his powers seem to be back. He even recognizes the smell of the older man. Jon’s voice is nearly strangled, choking back tears. He misses the safety of his mom.
