I recently got my first of THX “Optimum Resolution” DVDs, King of New York (used and with slipcover out as they’re rare). I expected a Seven Arts logo, but no in-home release of that film currently has the 7A logo, though the cover and label show it.
THX Optimum Resolution DVDs feature only the movie--no bonus features--to increase superior sound and picture quality, though they have a menu to play the film, go to scenes, and set-up subtitles (No other languages available; they use only English in high bit-rate Dolby Digital Surround EX 5.1) or use the THX Optimizer 2.0.
These releases focused so far specifically on Lionsgate-distributed projects, but perhaps more could be released if THX would resurrect their Digital Mastering Program again.
A special THX trailer is part of the DVD menu’s opening, where we start with the 2006 Lionsgate logo and then see it reflected in the standard CGI THX logo, which goes to its position on the main menu shown above.
If THX did more in the future, they should focus on Disney[-owned] releases (those tend to lack bonus material these days anyway). I’ll own Star Wars Episode(s) VII-IX when they’re THX-Certified and/or at least with Dolby EX sound.
