Autism & Neurodivergent Headcanons

TODAY IS A SCREAMING ABOUT AUTISM DAY!

Because apparently it's just the mood, and well, not entirely Autism, but like-- the kind of characters I enjoy. And rule number one is Neurodivergent Coded, in one form or another... Which is mostly Autism, but not always.

So, let's talk about some of the Neurodivergent ICONS I love.

So first, I'm going to go back to my OLDEST, well, okay more like second oldest fandom. With Sonic, specifically Sonic SatAM. And the character who STILL to this DAY defines my taste in characters about 75% of the time.

So, let's talk. This character, I have... no idea how many pages of a sketchbook I have just filled with him. But this is Antoine. D'Coolette in the comics, Depardieu in the cartoon. And he was my first... well, the FIRST character I ever so whole heartedly latched onto. Which is projection and the whole nine yards of that mess. Hell I have old, old OCs who I made into his family and just-- yeah--

So, Antoine, he's the coward of the show, the comic relief and the joke that's picked on. He's also ALWAYS anxious, has special focus and interests and lacks even basic social skills and has issues with vocalizing things properly. Antoine, ticks all the autism flags for me, with additional anxiety. Along with just, massive underdog sense. You need to remember, this was MY CHARACTER, as a kid.

And he still is. I could talk for ages on all the little things that he does that are Autistic or Autistic coded, but that would be a WHOLE other big giant post, and we're not really here for that, but just screaming briefly about Characters I love who're definitely ND

Meanwhile still on Sonic.

LOOK AT THIS ADHD ICON!

Like look! Look! The simple fact is, this is the first truly Nurodivergent ICON form of Sonic we have seen! And I mean that, before and always he was just-- fast. But have you watched the MOVIE?! And okay, there are jokes in the comics and even in the cartoon, but those were always really brief and not enough but Movie Sonic?! Like, this is the baby Sonic! This is definitely ADHD Sonic! This is the TRUE BLUE!

Although I will miss the old school Sonic from SatAM, I will not miss him being rather mean spirited towards my Autism Icon of a character. Which seriously, I have-- many complaints about SatAM on rewatching it as an adult, but one of the biggest is just generally how mean spirited Sonic is... as an aside though, I do still appreciate the series and wish that it got the completion it deserved, and Archie doesn't count.

Soooo, we all know, ALL KNOW! THE GREAT PAPYRUS IS AUTISTIC! But I would also, like to just make some comments in general about Sans. So let's lump the Skelebros together and talk about them. Papyrus is the obvious Autistic Icon! In so, so many ways, and damn it, I also have many, many comments to make on the who is older debate, but number one-- I want to talk about something in regards to Sans.

The general image we all have in the fandom is depression, but I would also like to raise Anxiety. And it's all subtle. But both the brothers are not neurotypical and people can FITE ME! I will counter with examples from the game and even some of the characterizations that you yourselves write people!

Also, on anxiety, we get a very small glimpse, but I think Papyrus has it as well, and that's just sad...

Benjamin Tennyson from his series by the same name. ADHD ICON! Also, the best kid with Aliens on his wrist, but only up to the end of Ultimate Alien and we do NOT talk about the retcons in Omniverse and beyond...

But Ben is not just ADHD, I have a missing half complete rant about Benjamin here and Autism, but I will cite Sumo Slammers as the BIG THING! Like do you know how many episodes of the Original series had him just-- deviating from the plot because THIS IS MY SPECIAL INTEREST! Like, that's big, and even grown up-- and he has routines and places that matter to the HEIGHT OF IMPORTANCE! That might be stupid to a casual observer, but for me. Yep.

Also just like, who doesn't want to have aliens at their fingertips, tell me?!

And the whole Uchiha Clan in general. And since this is a topic I've ranted on multiple times, I don't really think I need to talk about it again, just go dig through my Naruto tag, or my Autism one... or both, I don't really care. But this whole clan is one big Autistic Family. Also obvious from this series...

And the Number 1 Knuckleheaded Ninja himself. At least pre-shippuden and early on the boy is the ADHD icon! Actually, honestly, all Uzumaki are-- Again, this isn't something I really need to talk about, but I will complain a LOT about how badly Naruto was handled, and I do have many half finished angry rants about how they lost his empathy and it became so self-centered and just--

This boy annoys me beyond belief due to how it was handled.

For some amusement, I'll be honest-- there is only one member of Mystery Incorporated who I don't think is Neurodivergent, and no-- it's not the dog.

No but seriously. I have-- many, many feelings on this show, most of them really honestly too much for me to honestly put into enough words. But on the whole, one of the big things in NOBODY HERE FEELS TYPICAL! They're all neurodivergent best friends aside one single member, and I have many emotions and feelings, and just-- they're so, so good.

Shaggy definitely has some kind of anxiety, Freddy I have a whole rant somewhere about how he's Autistic, Velma gives off some MASSIVE OCD vibes, particularly when faced with challenges to her boxed world-view and while we could debate that to Autism-- not really... Scooby like Shag, has anxious, but he's also a Great Dane--

And Daphne minds them all!

I will also fight you on Vivi! Of course everyone already knows Arthur and anxiety-- but Vivi is SO Autistic/ADHD herself! Like you don't understand!

AND I CAN AND WILL SCREAM MORE ABOUT THESE TWO AS WELL!

Like! I do not think people yet understand! I am THIS CLOSE to digging more into the movies to see if I can find points for Sara and even Tiffany for being Autistic, but these two are the CLEAR AND OBVIOUS Cases! AND I LOVE THEM! Like, Tadeo took a while to grow on me, he's actions in the sequel are... well... But I do not think I could scream more about how clear these two are as Autistic Icons.

ESPECIALLY MUMMY!

Who's not just Autistic but confirmed as Asexual and nb!

Unfortunately I have a less than happy rant about Tadeo coming up, but right now! Let's just appreciate the sheer Autism this series has on display with not one but two characters the fandom can point out the signs in!

Not Autism surprisingly, but I would like to make an aside here for Héctor! For all I relate and ADORE Héctor! It's not Autism that he flags as. Not at all. I mean we can argue about it, people can have that headcanon, but I am firmly over here like, for all those signs there are some BIG things missing for that to click into place. And I do have a piecemeal rant in the process of being made--

But for now.

Héctor Rivera is the REAL ADHD ICON!

Inattentive ADHD, And he's such a GOOD boy for it as well. Like excuse me?! EXCUSE ME! This Papá may be distracted, impulsive and not exactly good at keeping details in his mind, or responsible with property or establishing boundaries but he's really, really a GOOD icon for ADHD! Also, contrasting--

As an aside as well, Anxiety.

Miguel and Victoria though, yeah they're Autistic for sure!

Anyway... this is enough of my screaming, so yeah... just a small glimpse of those Neurodivergent characters I love.

Are we allowed to spill spoilers from the Sonic Movie yet?! Because I have so many emotions about it! And I have a major theory/idea about what that energy that Sonic is creating/charging throughout even is!

And no folks, that is not just simple electricity.

Okay just in case I shall hide under the Read More. 

But first off, I LOVE this movie! It feels like all my dreams of Sonic on the Big Screen are finally real! And honestly, for all it’s predictability, I think that’s kind of the charm. We know what the plot will be, we know how this will go. It’s a Road Trip movie. So if you’ve seen any of those before you know... you know where this is going. But it works, it’s fun.

Second, the Human characters. And not just Eggman/Robotnik. I... surprisingly liked them. Tom and Maddie. Donut Lord and Pretzel Lady. I-- really unabashedly love them. Like, I genuinely get why they’re here and why they matter and it’s not like you need them sure, but they make sense, fit organically and honestly. I care for them. Also Donut Lord Tom punches Robotnik twice and it works, and there are just some of the best interactions between them and how antagonistic Robotnik is and I just unabashedly love them.

Also, no stealing Sonic’s light.

But Robotnik definitely steals the whole movie. If there’s an origin story for him already, I’m sorry but this movie surpasses it. Robotnik is by and large the most fun thing on the screen and absolutely every scene he’s in is the best hands down. Also, evil villain playlist! And the Badniks label along with another villain staple self destruct. Also, I’m sorry but his first reaction to seeing Sonic is PRICELESS. 

On that note, GIVE US MORE AGENT STONE SEGA! He’s hands down, one of the best people Robotnik’s bounced off in terms of Villainy aside back in SatAM with his nephew, and I want more. Also Stone comes with a side of no backstabbing which is always appreciated.

Then the star, the heart of the movie. Sonic! And yes, this is definitely his best presence in the modern age. Will likely never beat out SatAM Sonic in my heart in terms of the portrayal-- but that’s more a case of First Wins I think. But like-- this Sonic is literally a lonely baby who needs so much protection and there are THREE big scenes I really want to talk about in regards to his skill set, powers and abilities in this movie. So, let’s talk about that huh.

First off, let’s talk about the first time we really see Sonic’s abilities. And no, not as a Baby-baby. I mean the time we first see that electric effect. Yep, we’re here to talk about the Baseball field. First off, that game hits hard seeing Sonic that lonely, and the thrill that drops into sad rumination and then the running. 

Now here’s a little fun fact about that, you notice the way the energy is building and gathering, being drawn. Well here’s something else. ALL the way back in Sonic Adventure we got something fun from the Emeralds and their lore.

"The servers are the Seven Chaos. Chaos is power... Power enriched by the heart. The controller is the one that unifies the Chaos. "

That’s RIGHT! Tikal’s prayer, the Chaos emeralds... and also-- Someone go look up a video of Shadow using his Chaos Blast. Because you’ll notice some... similarities.

Gather Energy

Energy bursts out around with rippling electric waves and dissipates the further away it goes.

Yep! YEP! I think right there. We saw Sonic use his very own Chaos Blast! One supercharged by his emotions and honestly. That’s exactly how Chaos energy works! 

Secondly, as much as I want to talk about the bar fight scene-- that’s not the next time we see this energy charge. Nope! That’s right, next we’re talking about the Car Chase scene. Also-- I have... more than a few things about Sonic’s upset to say, but those can wait until later. So-- Sonic is working himself up and we get why, but then boom energy encasing him. And it’s emotional.

And then we see him launched and what happens next! SPIN DASH! Which tells me something I’ll be honest. It tells you a bit of how they’re doing that in the games. Also explains energy trails. 

Buuut that leads me kind of into the next things I want to talk about. And hey! It even includes a Robotnik scene. And that music. DAMN, Can I just take a moment to appreciate that for a moment. Because DAMN! GIMME! GIMME!

This song! And the scene accompanying it are just! ICONIC! Like come on, Robotnik is so deliciously evil, and let’s lead in straight to what makes this so necessary. He’s studying Sonic’s spine there. SPINE! Spine not quill, and oh man! Robotnik dancing and the flow, perfectly timed. But the thing that sticks out the most...

POWER ANALYSIS: UNLIMITED

Now... why does that sound familiar. Because of something Tails says when you rescue him. “They have Unlimited Power y’know” at the start of Sonic Adventure, and how he’s working to harness that power for his plane. Which also leads into the next scene directly, and the next use of Sonic’s power.

First off, the way Robotnik uses the spine. Very reminiscent of the early games and using the small animals to power his machinery, whiiich btw, I do believe those are chaos creatures considering how they interact with Chao, but that’s neither here nor there, but-- what’s the next big moment with Sonic’s power.

THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP! Which cheesy as hell, but this is a kid’s movie and again-- Let me spin you around to the first point. The biggest and oldest point. “Power Enriched by the heart!” The Chaos Emeralds literally run on power of friendship, if not being used for the negative energy! So you know!

Also-- as a final argument.

Robotnik speaks about detecting a pulse of energy similar to the original blast when tracking into Tom’s house. Now that could be speaking about Sonic himself-- but-- here’s a fun detail. The Warp Rings... are one of the only ways you can access the actual Chaos Dimension in the games, and thus can be imagined to run off it as well. And Sonic, who knows how long prior used one. Sooo if we imagine that’s what Robotnik was tracking there--

Sonic’s energy is the same as the Warp Rings, thus Chaos Energy.

I rest my case.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SONIC!

Not that I'm putting that much effort into the picture today, more like a birthday throw it together thing.

Going back to my roots.

If you didn’t expect this, you folks do not understand how much of a Sonic Fan I was back in the day... Soooo Ogórki! The pickle hedgehog! 

And as for the other three. Well if you have any familiarity with my roleplay scene well-- Say hii to three different versions of the same character but played by different people, thus different interpretations and yes, it’s technically a crossover but I’m not really interested in going too deep into it, since the ones who I drew know who they are. 

And those three aren’t the stars of this post. Nope, while yeah there they are, and I’ve put as much personality in as I could, the star is our little pickle hedgehog from the bootleg image. Ogórki! So here’s the thing... I admittedly did change a couple of details, namely some shades of colour, and well the arms. Because green bean baby. Loves Pickles and well... 

A few other things...

I mean, look, compare it. The arms... also the eyes colour and shoes... I decided to make his shoes lighter, and instead of white, I made his gloves and accents and minty colour. Including the eyes, which then became golden, and well, that works. And the green arms. Overall though, I had... a hell of a good time just scribbling him.

Him and the ones above. Going back to my early Sonic Fandom roots and days. I mean, seriously. You could not believe how nostalgic this made me for my early, early days. But yeah...

Just a sketch dump, because I ran out of time, but freaking... I feel so betrayed by my own drawing muse, because look what’s back! Look what is freaking back! SONIC....

Okay, so the blue hedgehog himself isn’t here in this dump of sketches, but hell. He’s here and they’re all calling me, and I am screaming because why, why, why? I had gotten out of that pit of fandom hell! I was free! I was even drawing Anthros in a more different, and unique and personal style finally! And then this! This and it all comes sprinting back! 

Also, yeah, Arthur... Why, how dare. Vivi and Lewis are and will be coming, once my brain can get over the why back here? Why now? shock of it... but anyway... I was just doodly doodling and then, Otter-Arthur happened. Mobian style, and then all my old world-building and headcanons came back, then potential crossover idea, in two different flavours popped up... and then welp, I was gone. 

Also, anyone who followed me back on DA when I first joined might recognize a few sketchy faces here... maybe... and of course the last two sketch doodles are just ghosts. Because let’s be honest here, I am a dork.
