Baldur's Gate 3 | Thyme's 2023 Media Thread
Here's something that pretty much everyone and their grandma has heard off in the past year. Though I'd heard of Baldur's Gate before, this is my first entry in the series.
Developer: Larian Studios Platform: Steam (PS5, XBX/S) Release: August 3rd, 2023 Genre: RPG
There may honestly be too much to talk about for this game, and I don't want to ramble or drag on much. I will not spoil anything, at least nothing major.
Summary: You've been caught by mindflayers, and they gave you brainworms. Now you have to escape the Nautiloid, with the help of Lae'zel and Shadowheart (optional), then find a way to get the brainworms removed!
But wait, there's more! As you go forward on your adventure, you'll discover that maybe your brainworm problems aren't the most pressing compared to what's going on behind the scene.
Thoughts: I love D&D, I love RPGs, and I never played Baldur's Gate before. BG3 has a lot going for it, but it wasn't without its frequent issues and bugs. Thankfully, Larian addressed a lot of issues along the way, some of which did make me put the game aside for a few weeks.
Not to mention, my PSU might have been underpowered... because this game fried it, and I had to buy a new one. So now I'm only playing BG3 on the work PC.
Throughout my playthrough, I had a lot of fun over all, the game is fantastic. My favorite part is the characters, specifically the companions. I've only played on playthrough, playing as Tav, modeled after Cadence, one of my D&D character and current online avatar.
Most of the playthrough consisted of me playing the support Lore Bard, and that was a lot of fun, especially when it came time to Haste Karlach to bring in the pain. Speaking of which, she is the character I chose to romance. She's perfect, I love her. Getting her ending was great.
Otherwise, my usual companions were generally Karlach, Shadowheart and Astarion. Depending on the questline I'd work on, I would switch to the appropriate characters, but sometimes I just like to shake things up and swap the party a bit.
I loved the overall story, and I think my favorite quests were generally the ones that involve the companions. The character interactions are delightful.
Now then, this is a video game that lets you save anywhere at any time... it's very easy to fall into save scumming habits, which I definitely did. But they added Honor mode a bit before I'd finished my first playthrough. I'm thinking I'll try my hand at it, would be fun to deal with the consequences of my actions.
Aside from that, the class system is pretty good, but only being able to reach Level 12 is a bummer, but I understand why. This is the equivalent of a D&D campaign that goes 1-12, so it wouldn't be balanced for higher levels in the first place.
I didn't make use of multi-classing this time around, and I kept the companions as their base class too, aside from doing some respecs on them, especially Shadowheart switched to Tempest.
Conclusion: Anywho, I'll conclude by saying that this has been one of my favorite games from 2023, and I'll definitely be playing it again, and maybe with friends this time.
I'm very interested in doing a Durge run, so that might be what I do next. We'll see.
