I updated Laserwing again, unbelievably, and to celebrate here's a sketch of our two Earthling Scythes Holy Blades of the Striped King and their respective little weirdos, S'nolaan and Tidge. S'no has been in a couple pages but Tidge, despite having art references and even having been placed on a few pages in the sketch phase, somehow continues to have not shown up. They decided to get together for a movie night.

I've got a few scenarios in my head for S'no and Tidge getting to meet the other humans. S'no and Tony would get along beautifully and Tidge technically already knows Mistaire (sorta). Once I have every character comfortably established in the places they're meant to be, I could honestly write a bunch of little stories where these two just screw around on Earth. Imagine Tidge sneaking into an Earth movie theater.

What are they even here for? Their job title is 'processor' which is a little like a secretary, a radar tech, mission control, whatever they need to be. S'no is looking into a career path in engineering with the weird scythe computer mirrors, while Tidge is investigating the murder of a very important ancestor, and maybe will be a courier? Because he likes to travel. He might need to travel a lot to track down the guy who killed great grandma.

1. What’s each other their cell phone contact names for each other?

Tince: “babe ♥” for Lance and “sweetpea ♥” for Tina

Keina: “kitten” for Tina and “kitty” for Keith - both with a cat face emoji

Tink: “angel” for Tina and “pumpkin” for Hunk - these also with emojis

Tidge: “muffin” for Pidge and “cupcake” for Tina - they’d use the cake emojis but yup, emojis

Shina: “moon” for Shiro and “star” for Tina - ofc, emojis included

Allina: “berry” for Tina - with a grape emoji instead but you do what you can - and “snowflake” for Allura, with snowflake emoji

Valico: “ghost king” with a ghost emoji for Nico, “evening star” for Val, with a star emoji. Nico is so embarrassed he never lets anyone know, Val is just really fucking gay once he finds out tbh.

2. Who’s the one to go to the grocery store with a full list of what they need, and who’s the one that goes for one thing and gets everything else but that one thing?

Tince: Tina’s the first, Lance the second. Keina: Keith the first and Tina the last. Tink: Tina the first, Hunk a mix of the two. Tidge: Tina the first, Pidge the last. Shina: Shiro the first, Tina the last. Allina: Tina the first, Allura the last. Tina varies between the two because she usually likes to follow a list, but if she’s with someone else that can take care of the list then she wanders... Valico: Nico’s the first and Val’s the last.

3. Who has a calendar with things they’re going to be doing today, and who doesn’t have a set schedule and still ends up missing deadlines?

Okay so, neither Val nor Tina have a calendar. They do try to always be early to stuff, but they have no calendar. Shiro, Hunk, Allura, and Lance would have a calendar I think; Keith, Pidge, and Nico would be the last.

4. Who decorates the house?

Both Val and Tina would love to do that, but also decide to do so with their s/o. They wouldn’t take such important decisions alone, yknow?

5. How do they function as a family unit? (Whether it be the two of you or some little ones!)

Both Tina and Val are really good with kids, so they’d function well with kids involved.

I think Shiro, Lance, Hunk and Keith would work really well as parents! But also as a family unit, although Keith and Tina would need to sort out a way to handle things when they clash, but they would. Pidge and Allura I feel like would have troubles with kids, but Allura would deal with functioning as a family unit without kids pretty well. Pidge... well, it depends? I feel like she’d work, in her own way, but she would. Nico would take some time to adjust to being a family unit of any kind, but I feel like he’d love it.

6. What are they’re plans for the future?

Both Val and Tina have no plans. They just wanna get through their days, maybe find something worth living for, and just stay with their s/os, for now.

7. How do they decide what they do for dinner? 

Tina and Val are very chill, all “anything’s fine by me”. So they’d make the other choose. If they can’t find a compromise that works for everyone, fast food is the go to.

8. Are their any nightly/morning routines that they do?

Tina and Lance do their skin care together! Tina also practices with Shiro and Keith, although she doesn’t follow their morning routines always, sometimes she just wants to sleep in.

9. Do they visit family for the holidays or stay home?

Well... Tina has no family, and the paladins can’t exactly go home. In a modern setting, Tina would accompany those who would go back to their families for the holidays! Val prefers not to visit family ever again. Sometimes he’s invited to spend the holidays with Nico in the Underworld, which... might not sound great, but hey, he’s with Nico, so that works for him. It also works that his father doesn’t hate him (yet).

10. Who is early on bills and who is right on time?

Val and Tina are always early. Always. Allura, Shiro and Hunk would be early, Lance, Pidge, Keith, and Nico would be right on time.

And here’s an assortment of aliens.  The Scythes will be more important later, but even as quick early appearances they need consistent character designs.  Tidge was supposed to get into chapter 5 and just...I forgot.  But Atrolyx and ‘unnamed female Gowgow’ got in.  Whoops.

The Deep Children down in this last picture are only relevant because Marina’s around.  Sylvette’s not joining the cast for a while, and the others are all minor.

I actually really like Amber and Adam.  I didn’t realize at first that they have names from child abduction laws but I like the idea that they’re themed.  Amber Alert and Adam Code.  Naida is so named for being a Naiad.  I was sure that ‘Erinn’ was the name of a river and it’s not, but that’s her name.  Beau’s original name was Blue and there’s a strong chance I’ll change it back before he ever appears.  He’s bad news.

This is supposed to be a fully grown adult Tidge, but I wasn’t sure how to make an adult design for him because his species just kind of...looks like this.  I haven’t done as much detailed xenobiology for Rrigs as I have for other species, and part of the joke is that they’re impenetrably alien to everyone else.  On top of that, Tidge is on the tall side for a species that’s shorter than most, so even next to other Rrigs or next to humans it’s really hard to get a sense of scale.  Well, here he is.  An adult Tidge.

I can’t belieeeeve I had forgotten to draw a basic school uniform card for Tidge.  Tidge is in the class, he’s important and valid!

I’m really pleased with these, I’m still learning how to paint backgrounds but I’m getting better.  And I like having these simultaneous shots of poor Bonba’s country getting dragoned.  The Dragums in question aren’t specific characters, just some rando mercenaries who show up to do a job.  So it’s fun for me that as distant shadows they’re a bit menacing but close up they’re rather goofy looking.

Kumi has the least characterization so far of the Uskanin so I need to figure him out more by sketching him.

I’m so glad I added these weird alien birds into the scene at the last minute.

Now I need to figure out a design for adult future Tidge.  But that golden statue is nnnoooot a good example of what the average adult Rrig would look like.

Here comes a Tidge!  Silently he swooshes, Tidgeing about in secret amongst the shadow boys.

I had been hesitant to do wing symbolism in his aura effect but his ‘wings’ are drastically different in style from Tony’s.  They’re a little more like Crassa’s shoutpole effects, they’re not functional limb wings so much as a shield field.
