RECORD OF THE WEEK
Daemonheim - Tidian (Rain Without End, 2014)
Man, these days it's pretty rare that I listen to a black metal record and think, "Holy fuck, those guys can fucking SHRED". Don't get me wrong, I'm not that great of a guitar wizard (read: I fucking rip), and it's not as though my taste is so good that I'm constantly bemused by the insane technical abilities of the musicians I'm listening to (again, read: I have the best taste). I only mean to say that it would be impossible not to notice the six string sorcery at work here.
Tidian is a tight record. 7 songs in 48 minutes (pretty short for new black metal oriented stuff), and each one as well crafted as the next. These Germans aren't afraid of genre-busting either, incorporating plenty of post-metal, thrash, doom and -gasp- even djent. It almost sounds like it'd be too much, but it plays perfectly. The accents here really are just accents, and not afterthoughts, or lame bridges. All in all, those 48 minutes fly by faster than the 32nd notes being torn through at breakneck speed by unsere freunde.
Things are going to be changing a little around these parts next week, so I'm happy to be closing this chapter of my saga with such a great record. Stay tuned weirdos....
Stream it here, thanks to bandcamp.
