"Stupidity should hurt."

As quoted by David Clemons, my instructor this past summer at Penland. I was a student in his Beguiled Brooch class and it was an absolute pleasure. My training as a metalsmith has primarily came from women thus far; strong, bad-ass women. So I was excited to be taking a class from an instructor whose background and perspectives would be quite different.  His work is insanely precise and I loved how he introduced us to many different materials. Sterling Silver is EXPENSIVE. So finding other materials I love that aren't so costly is important.  

In the Beguiled Brooch class I was most attracted to working with gut. This led to my second love of the class, tie wire. Both materials are completely new to myself and my work and are both extremely inexpensive. 

My work with gut and tie wire feels right to me. I've been working as a metalsmith for two and half years and I've made some beautiful pieces that I'm very proud of BUT this work feels very true to my aesthetic. More importantly, I'm excited to see where it will go.
