I've been working on A Thing for my younger grandson's 17th birthday - I'm teaching myself Tunisian crochet by making a necktie with sock yarn and a 3 mm hook. It is slow going, but I'm determined. He's over 6' tall, so the tie needs to be at least 5' long. I've got about two more feet to go, then the edging and the blocking . . .
Now, my big problem with a labor-intensive project is that I get restless, start feeling like I'm getting nowhere, and verge on giving up. In order to rewire my brain (and attitude), I'll pick up a simple, easy-do thing, bang it out, and get back to the Main Event. So far I've done that three times.
First, I took a break to make some tie pins:
A Scrabble tile and a button made some simple ones, but the one in the middle - that's the jewel in the crown right there. It's the medallion from the 4-on-the-floor gear shift knob from one of my early rides - a sun faded red Toyota Corona. I called it The Tomato. Grandson has his learner's permit and is on track to getting his license in a couple of months - I think he'll get the biggest kick out of that one.
Second and third breaks were for making pocket monsters. There are dozens of freebie patterns floating around out there, so I thought I'd experiment, and find my own way as I go.
Went a bit fierce with this one. They really are a load of fun to make - but I gotta get back to that tie now. My deadline is in three days.
