One of the great equalizers, a sharp blade.
Last week I talked about BJJ being great for self defense, and it truly is. However, the warrior methods of Kali (the bladed art) can be utterly disparaging in the wrong circumstances. This clip filmed with our instructor Guro Dan Inosanto may be dated, it’s from the late 70′s, however the information is still valid today.
In fact I’ve had a lot of interaction with local law enforcement and authorities stating the “new” awareness of knife attacks. Inosanto was one of the first of his kind to do a preliminary study with the LAPD back in the day. The argument as it stands today is can you take an aggressor down with a knife? Even if you’re armed LEO with a gun? With the gun holster? How many feet per second can the knife wielder cross? Watch the video to find out.
As you’ll see, a knife is a very real, very dangerous situation. Within 5-10 feet it is an incredible tool for attack or defense. Here at RCW we teach Kali, and like all tools they take care and discipline to handle. We advocate that a pocket knife can be a very valid tool for self defense and offer congruent instruction.
Personally I like Kali for its efficacy, and also the ability it offers to defend ones self under duress. Where boxing or Jiu Jitsu might fail once the cardiovascular tank is spent, or with multiple attackers, Kali begins to shine. It can be done for a workout, but it can also be done with minimal effort. Think of the saying “let the tool do the work.”
Many of our students and practitioners understand the value of a fire arm for self defense. As points brought out in the video illustrate, it’s also important to combine with projectile training one of hand to hand defense.
