that looks like korean melon to me, but it is also possible to be tiger melon! korean melon is yellow and tiger melon orange, so either is possible to look like a 'pumpkin' depending on what varieties of pumpkin are commonly sold near you.
Thank you for these ideas! I looked up korean, tiger, and canary melon, and they all definitely look like pumpkins and are sweet inside, I'd be beside myself to have seeds for something as cool as that!
However, looking at the seeds these melons have, they're distinctly melon-type seeds, and what I got is a squash type, and it's something the lady carved out of store-bought produce, and I've never seen any of these cool melons in a grocery store
EDIT: Upon further inspection, korean melon does have more of a squash-looking type seed! That one could be in the running :o
This entire mystery might be due to her poor memory, and she might have given me the wrong descriptors, but it's a lot of fun theorizing and in the end the plant will produce something and we'll find out! It also might happen that whatever that store-bought thing was, it was a hybrid, so the result of planting the seeds will be something completely different that has nothing to do with the fruit that she had.
You know some cool melon varieties :D I've never seen any of these before! Here's pictures:
