VNC U C?
Stubbornly I have kept over looking VNC. I think is stem from a bad experience in the past I can’t remember. I think the inherent insecurity that VNC has (it only encrypts the log in not the session) has never sat easy with me. Yes I know you can SSH Tunnel but thats extra steps I wish were built in. However rather than dismiss it with my prejudice, I thought I’d give it a shot. I choose Vino as my VNC server for no other reason than it is simple to set up (TightVNCServer would have been next up). And simple it is, pretty much 2 lines of code. No messing around with the exception of making screen res stick but that more a Lubuntu issue then Vino. Using TightVNC client on Windows I’ve been pretty impressed. It’s quick and does a fine job replicating the Desktop. In fact it shows some of the weakness of the vSphere client which is perfectly serviceable but not as quick or slick. It’s worth pointing out that if you intend to use VNC in the wild, SSH tunnelling is a must. Within your network basic password may be fine but externally get it setup. The question for me now is what iOS app to use. There are many out there and to my surprise all the good ones support ssh tunnelling. They don’t come cheap (£5-20) but if they work well it’s an app I will use for a long time. Need to do some checking and test on them before I commit.
