Quick question regarding Slate's jawline. Did he also have surgery to give it a more square shape? I noticed that he was already on T when he got his top surgery and I did a little research into whether that can cause a squared jaw, but from what I am gathering it's more about genetics. Was it an artistic choice to represent how he views himself? I'm just very curious as a fellow artist.
A GOOD QUESTION. It’s probably more of an exaggeration of the effects of testosterone on my part lmao. Some men have their jaws fill out when they go on T but I’m sure a lot of them also get masculinization surgery. In reality im still figuring out a lot abt Slate’s background as I go (he’s on T and had top surgery obviously but this comic is pretty tied in with my own Gender Journey so im admittedly still learning). I only came out as transmasc a little over a year ago hfdsfh
I probably overdid it in terms of masculinizing his features, probably bc i wanted to make a clear design distinction between pre and post-t slate. Maybe I can retcon in a surgery but it seems easier to just make pre-transition Slate have a squarer jaw……surgery is expensive, and the only reason he was able to afford top surgery was bc his parents helped + his drag friends raised money for him.
Slate is also fortunate in passing bc he wasnt SUPER feminine to begin with (dude’s like 5′11 and was already muscular from his profession).
I also havent drawn recent pre-transition Slate in a while (all the ones in the holiday comic are from like, age 12 or younger i THINK? my memory is shit) so the best way to amend this would probably be to lessen the gap between his facial structure and make him look more square before that.
ANYWAY thats a lot of rambling the point is it was originally meant to be a result of hormones but i came up with that when my knowledge abt transitioning wasnt as good. this is what happens when u make comics as a baby trans lmao
