Summary: Tikal and Shade meet up at the Master Emerald Temple every day. That day, Shade confesses her frustration of keeping their relationship a secret, and Tikal gripples with her failure of reassuring Shade.
Written for @sthfemslashweek !! I chose the song of the day :3
“Were you awake for it?”
Tikal didn’t answer for a second, then pushed a quill behind her shoulder. “Huh?”
“You know what I’m talking about.”
She stared down at her lap, then up at the clouds. “Maybe.”
“That’s a good way to put it.” Shade leaned back against the stone steps, following her gaze to the sky. “Maybe.”
“It’s like a dream. When you think back on it, you can’t tell if you felt every second, or if it went by in an instant.”
“Sometimes it felt more like a few weeks, and sometimes a blink.”
“And it’s all hazy anyway.”
“Like... you said it was like a dream, but I feel like it’s when you’re barely awake. When your mind is still drifting towards dreams, but you know you’re supposed to be coming back to reality. You’re waking up and remembering what’s real and what’s fake. But then we were just... trapped in those moments. So you’re about to wake up, but just... never do.”
“For four-thousand years.”
“Yeah.”
Tikal shut her eyes, letting the wind hit against her. “And sometimes you remember things. Peering through the shards. But you don’t know if that was part of the dream or something outside.”
“And now sometimes you wonder if you’re still dreaming.”
“Are we?” Tikal turned to her, eyes glazed over.
Shade didn’t meet her gaze. “Good question.”
Unpopular Opinion but...
Shipping Shade the Echidna with Characters who aren't Knuckles is fun and y'all should try it sometimes.
