This is the most egregious snub in Oscar history. Danielle Deadwyler gave one of the best performances of 2022, and perhaps of all time. She gives such a haunting, emotionally layered and complex portrayal of such an historically important figure in the civil rights movement, and Black history. She portrays Mamie Till, whose immense love and grief for her teenage son, Emmett Till, who was brutally tortured and killed in Mississippi in 1955. It is about the most despicable racist hate crime that sparked the Civil Rights movement. Mamie Till fought through, and channeled her grief into action, bringing her son’s murder to court, and infamously the two white men who murdered Till, were found by an all white jury not guilty. Mamie Till became a civil rights warrior. How the film, and Deadwyler got snubbed, while it’s producer Whoopi Goldberg is a Governor of the Academy is beyond disrespectful. Just days prior to the Oscar nominations were announced, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis banned AP African American Studies with “Queer theory” courses as he describes, in high schools throughout the state. As we are reminded how fragile freedom is, and the prevalence of racism, fear and hate in our country, our politics and society. It is extremely appalling that the Academy did not recognize Till nor its brilliant lead, Danielle Deadwyler. To me, it says loud and clear the Academy does not care about Black history, which is also American history. Shame on the Academy. Till deserved better.
