Emmett Till would have turned 82 today.

In 1955, he was 14 when he was kidnapped and killed for “inappropriately interacting with a white woman” in Mississippi.

We cannot live up to our greatest ideals without confronting the realities of our past.

This is the most egregious snub in Oscar history. Danielle Deadwyler gave one of the best performances of 2022, and perhaps of all time. She gives such a haunting, emotionally layered and complex portrayal of such an historically important figure in the civil rights movement, and Black history. She portrays Mamie Till, whose immense love and grief for her teenage son, Emmett Till, who was brutally tortured and killed in Mississippi in 1955. It is about the most despicable racist hate crime that sparked the Civil Rights movement. Mamie Till fought through, and channeled her grief into action, bringing her son’s murder to court, and infamously the two white men who murdered Till, were found by an all white jury not guilty. Mamie Till became a civil rights warrior. How the film, and Deadwyler got snubbed, while it’s producer Whoopi Goldberg is a Governor of the Academy is beyond disrespectful. Just days prior to the Oscar nominations were announced, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis banned AP African American Studies with “Queer theory” courses as he describes, in high schools throughout the state. As we are reminded how fragile freedom is, and the prevalence of racism, fear and hate in our country, our politics and society. It is extremely appalling that the Academy did not recognize Till nor its brilliant lead, Danielle Deadwyler. To me, it says loud and clear the Academy does not care about Black history, which is also American history. Shame on the Academy. Till deserved better. Till is harrowing. Till is such a relevant and important film that reflects racial discrimination that is continuing today. “Fake news” and deflecting onto others or its subject as the Mississippi officer told Mamie Till at stand, “I think you and the NAACP plotted this.” The south which propagated lies of fear and hate embedded in a section of the country rooted in ensuring white patriarchal prosperity over people of color. The racist officer who accused a mother of plotting her sons death is a case I hope we don’t see anymore but “fake news” and discomfort or hostility towards anything different that confronts change. The devoted quiet yet strong single mother, Mamie Till who lost her son, her only child Emmett or “Bo” in one of the most ugliest, inhumane, horrific cases of hate crime in the 20th Century. Mamie became a fighter for her son, she fought hard enough for a Trial in the racist state in the US, Mississippi and had her uncle, the first black man to stand up against a white man. No justice was served at this openly one sided, racist trial in Mississippi 1955, but Mamie would be a quiet fighter for Civil Rights til her death in 2003. In 1955, a black boy or child could whistle at a white woman and that child could or would be brutally tortured and killed. Emmett Till’s 14 year life was far too brief and sniffed out beyond brutally, but his death and memory sparked the civil rights moment. Racial injustice and discrimination is still very much in our country, not only our past but deeply in our present. Deadwyler’s performance is haunting and eloquently fierce as the film shows no violence, but through Mamies perspective we see a quiet mother become a warrior for her child, and find meaning fighting along with the NAACP to ensure open awareness and change for the Black community in its fight against bigotry or discrimination of any kind. We'd like to take a moment to pay homage to the life of #EmmettTill... Sixty-seven years later we're chanting #BLACKLIVESMATTER, STILL?! Sixty-seven years to date and we're still bearing the grief of #BlackMothers that had to bury their son. It's been sixty-seven years yet we still cannot shake the harrowing image of a stoic #MamieTill peering at her son. When will the impunity enjoyed by make america great again extremists come to an end? Why do tough on crime conservatives fail to prosecute when the plaintiff has pale skin? It's been sixty-seven years to date and America continues to fail the #BlackYouth. Peace to the #EmmettTillGeneration and organizations that empower the Black Youth. Let us never forget brother Emmett nor the brothers and sisters slain neath the blind eye of society. Question: How can one afford a #peacefulprotest, while our brothers and sisters are dying violently? Why must my grandmother and granddaughter shed the same tears? How long must my #freedomcries go unanswered before freedom rings 'round here? How are we to look into the innocent faces of our sons, nephews, cousins, and grandsons without seeing traces of Emmett, Trayvon, and Tamir? How long are we to watch little Bobby and Becky skylark through the park while #IndigoChildren disappear?! What's it gonna take to indict Carolyn Bryant and her coconspirators for the kidnapping and murder of brother Emmett in Mississippi? How long before you notice that these anti-wOke laws are being drafted to keep you from truly seeing the heinous acts committed by white people throughout American history? Truth be told, the nineteen-fifties are not too far removed, we all have access to someone that was alive in nineteen fifty-five. We've all witnessed the police murder unarmed Black people and we've all watched a white mass murderer leave a mass shooting alive.
