The first episode of my new series is now live. Please let me know what you think, and share if you like it. I’ll be making more of them - I have several in progress already and am open to suggestions as well.

Making art is a really vulnerable activity. You are moved by something in life, you have an idea, you execute... and you wait. You don’t make art for other people, but there is always an underlying desire that others will love what you create. There’s something about this validation and shared emotion that makes you feel less alone. When someone buys a piece of mine, I know it has captured and touched on something in their story. That’s what art does for all of us! I have loved this Tillikum mixed media since I made it - I cried and cried when he died in captivity - and now this painting has a new home. (And yes, I talk about my art like it’s a living being. When you spend that much time and emotion bringing something into existence, it feels super real). I always say that each painting is waiting for the person who ends to buying it. And then I know that that person gets it! And they deserve to have this creation in their life. Thanks for getting it, Kenady... in both ways 😘🐋🌊 • #artconnectsus #tillikum #mixedmedia (at Seattle, Washington) https://www.instagram.com/hopeblackart/p/BwksWYXHj-6/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1jkieb51mrioe

yesterday evening coming over the tillikum. #springlooks #mthood #tillikum #apollo
I’ve watched Blackfish for the umpteenth time and I finally wanted to draw something to show how I feel. I’m so sorry, Tillikum, that your life was so horrible. And to every other whale in captivity, I’m sorry as well. I take a stand on animal captivity for entertainment, and with orcas being my favourite marine mammal, I stand up against their captivity. Maybe one day we can abolish all marine parks, and focus more on preserving and learning from them in the wild. It’s my dream to finally see orcas in the wild, where they belong. <3
"The killer whale (also known as Orca or Blackfish) is an important medicine animal to the Native American tribes of the Northwest Coast. Killer whales are considered a particular symbol of power and strength, and catching sight of one is considered a momentous omen. Some tribes, such as the Tlingit, view the killer whale as a special protector of humankind and never hunted killer whales (although they were accomplished whale hunters of other species.) The Kwakiutl tribes believed that the souls of marine hunters turned into killer whales upon their death, just as the souls of forest hunters turned into wolves. For this reason, there were a number of special rituals regarding the killing of a killer whale, so that its spirit could be reborn as a human once again" Photo via @conversation_ocean
