Former Nationals leader Tim Fischer, who was deputy prime minister in John Howard's Coalition government, has died after a battle with cancer.
Tim Fischer was deputy prime minister of Australia when the Port Arthur Massacre happened in 1996. He was the leader of the junior coalition partner in the government of the time, the National Party - formerly known as the Country Party - which is a rural-based conservative party that looks out particularly for the interests of farmers.
There were a lot of very angry people in rural Australia when the government announced the new gun laws in response to what happened in Port Arthur, including the outlawing of certain types of weapons, the rules about how and where legal guns could be stored and used, and the gun buy-back scheme for the guns that were already out there in the community.
Tim Fischer did not hesitate. He went out there and talked and persuaded and sold the new gun laws to country people. It would have been almost impossible to get the whole thing done without the National Party onside, and without Tim Fischer’s leadership.
So even though I disagreed with Tim Fischer’s politics most of the time, I will be forever grateful that he was a decent man who put the wellbeing of the whole of the Australian community first.
