#vinyloftheday is a strange oddity from the 1980s, the debut major label record the band #timbuk3, which produce their soul US charting hit, "the future's so Bright I gotta Wear Shades". The band produced jangly, desert Western inflected pop, not necessarily unlike Stan Ridgway, with a really wry sense of humor; case in point, the future so bright single became for decades a popular song to play at high school and college graduations, even though the actual meaning of the song was it ironic grim look at a possible future nuclear Holocaust scenario (not unlike how Springsteen's "Born in the USA" is not the patriotic anthem many thinks the chorus makes it out to be). The band should have done better chartwise, because I definitely wrote some great tunes over the course of their half-dozen albums, but this is the only one I have on #vinyl. It was one of the first records produced by Dennis Herring, who later became famous for producing albums by Ben Folds, the Hives, Modest Mouse, and Elvis Costello.
