A thought on the Time Commission

I will preface this with saying that I have watched the TV show and not read the comics so I will apologize if anything conflicts with what is known.

I have been thinking about the Time Commission lately and the hows or whys of is coming into being.

Now it is easy to assume that the answer is power. But what power is to be gained by the end of the world.

What if it was truly to keep things from getting worse.

Picture this:

The very first timeline, long before the Commission comes into being, the event that was the end of the world didn’t. It destroyed the City. A single man, whose family was in the city at that time, dedicated his life to stopping the catastrophe.

He figures out time travel, build the first iteration of the briefcase and goes back. He changes things and the catastrophe shifts, now taking out most of the state the city is in. See several more iterations of this as others gain knowledge to time travel and try and change things and things get worse and worse.

By the time the Commission come into being this event is a global apocalypse. What’s worse is that no one can figure out how to even downgrade it back to an earlier catastrophe, something about the way the shifting happens obscures the change made.

The commission works to maintain the status quo because every attempt to make it better has made it exponentially worse.

This does not excuse their methods, murder and torture and the like, but maybe the reason that they worked so hard to stop Five and the other Hargreeves is that somewhere upper management is going “He’s going to blow up the damn planet”
