New AMV! I got inspired by my recent Princess Tutu viewing and the release of Wintersun's new album Time II to put together a fun little combination. A celebration of both.

Album of the week: Wintersun - Time II

Release: 2024

Length: 48min

Thoughts: This was probably one of the most expected and most dreaded albums in my entire listening history. Time I was a giant of its time (pun intended) and while The Forest Seasons was good, it was still a full twelve years between Time I and II, with repeated fundraisers, a semi-controversial Patreon, and increasingly exasperated fans. This album could have been a complete letdown. Luckily it is not.

I can confidently say that nobody was looking for Jari to come back with some new, fully overhauled sound, and he didn't. Time II neatly fits into its mould, from the Japanese-inspired sound and visuals, the folky touches, and mix of extreme vocals with calmness. What is clearly improved is the production, everything is crisp and sounds placed exactly where it's supposed to be. It feels like a classical piece in many respects, something that takes time to savor, not just because the songs are long even by metal standards.

Was it worth a 12 year wait? The sound definitely feels different in a metal scene where conventions and style have changed so much. I'm not even 30 yet and the shift has been both personal and industry-wide. But maybe that doesn't matter because it's a damn good album.
