Time Went By (Serial # 2)
Dinner on the couch accomplished being both the most uncomfortable and thoroughly enjoyable activity of her day. Perhaps the most difficult task was trying to keep all the falling grains of rice contained within the foil wrapped around the Chipotle burrito she picked up on her way home. By the end of the meal, which was spent in front of a tv playing reruns of Seinfeld, it wasn't entirely uncommon that she was surrounded by a scattering of burrito bits, in a relaxed position that relayed both defeat and satisfied surrender.
It was a ridiculously delicious meal that she managed to convince herself was "healthy" despite the globs of extra sour cream she requested.
Jerry was doing his stand up thing, the quintessential New Yorker everyone all imagined with fuzzy hair and a lot of unnecessary antics.
A knock rapped against the door and without any response of welcome, Hannah, the painfully loud neighbor from next door, entered the room in a leather jacket and sacked skirt, her lips wine stained but wide in a smile.
"I see the party started without me."
"I ate my only guest." Lucy said pointing at the tin foil rolled on the floor. She sat up and yawned, then plopped back onto the couch.
"So, I'm on this date with this real winner. We'll call him Benny." His real name was Brady, but it didn't matter. This was the way most of Hannah's conversations started out.
"I'd met him through a good friend of mine. 'You'll like him' she said. 'He's right up your alley.' She claimed. Well, let me tell you something, Lucy. I don't know what shady ass alley she thinks I roam through, because that motherfucker had no fuckin' nose! Not a stitch! He had a bandage, God help him, wrapped around his face like a white flag of surrender. Now, look here. I don't consider myself shallow. I dated Rick for fuck's sake, but what does that say about what my friend thinks of me? We want the best for each other right?! RIGHT? So I call her up, after what was possibly the longest date of my life, and casually ask her why she felt like this guy would be a perfect match for me....'cause I was just curious, you see. 'Well,' she said and I could tell that she was raking around that plastic head of hers 'He's got a great personality, don't you think? It's almost like you two belong together.' At this point my blood boils, but I remain calm. She's my friend after all. Her mother does my hair, Lucy!
But then she goes on. She GOES ON and that's where the real mess begins. 'So, how did it go, Hannah? Did you like him? I don't mean to be nosy or anything, but I just have to know.' Nosy. NOSY?! It was like she was fuckin' rubbing salt in with her manicured fingertips, and she knew it too! I could hear it in her voice!
'So! That's how it's gonna be!' See, at this point she's got me in a knot. 'Why...what's wrong, Hannah?' Hannah, she says, without a flinch. The nerve of this woman, Lucy. The NERVE.
'Don't tell me you don't know!' I say. 'Not only was he missing a very important part of his face, but he had the personality of a rock. You'd think a guy with no nose would put in a little more effort!" This next part really kills me. 'No nose? Really? Oh, I hadn't noticed.' She hadn't noticed, Lucy. Isn't that just the fuckin' screams? 'How could you not notice!?' I yell. 'There's A WHOLE IN THE MIDDLE OF HIS FUCKIN FACE! Where there should be Mount Everest, there's the Grand Canyon! Boy, you really know how to pick em!' I say, to silence on the other end. "
"So, then what?" Lucy asked, stifling her laughter.
"So, then I hung the phone and here I am." She collapsed onto the edge of the sofa. "You know what the weirdest part of it all was? Watching him sneeze. He could still sneeze. Could you fuckin' believe it? I wondered if he did that on purpose, you know? To break the tension? An elephant in the room sorta thing."
"Elephants have noses. Really big ones." Lucy pointed out.
"Worst part was when our food arrived and I took a deep breath in with an insensitive 'this smells good' attached. I almost died of embarrassment.'
"If he could sneeze, he could smell. Don't you think?"
"Who knows."
"Who NOSE." Lucy said pointing to the tip of her own pointed feature.
"Oh, fuck off."
