Summary: Never fall in love - such is the admonition given to Rumplestiltskin. Blue sees fit to interfere with his plan to reach a world without magic by sending him there herself so that he can pursue his quest to find his son, but he is not alone in this world without magic, nor does it appear that he is entirely free to live his life as he would wish. In the course of his seemingly fruitless search for Baelfire, Rumplestiltskin takes a job as a history teacher at an exclusive private school, and there meets Isabelle - the French teacher. All of a sudden that interdiction against falling in love seems to be really important.

Chapter 4 - An Ordinary Life
Transitions were always hard, new lives harder. It wouldnāt be the first time of course, that Rumplestiltskin had changed from one identity to another, but for some reason, trying to be ānormalā was proving to be a challenge. It seemed the past was always trying to pull him back.
The head teacherās office was such a melting pot of Clorox, dark brew coffee, and cheap air freshener to disguise the mingled scents of adolescents or sickness - probably both - that it propelled him instantly back to the incident with the doctor that he had only just days before been discussing with Cambridge. There was even a black and white print poster of famous people throughout history, most of whom did not even look like themselves, with a blank space in the corner next to the question, āYou?ā
The head teacher returned to the room, and apologized for having had to deal with a discipline issue, and to thank him for waiting. A woman clearly close to retirement; the lines of weariness clear on her face.Ā
āMy pleasure,ā he answered quietly.
āSo⦠Mister Gold - Sheridanā¦ā she smiled at him, and fixed her graying hair back behind her ears. She was clearly flustered, Ā So he sat and waited for her to regain her composure. He wanted this to go well, after all.
āBeen at this school for thirty years now,ā she volunteered. āThe last ten as the head teacher, and so much has changed. Depressing really - I feel so old.ā
Rumplestiltskin shook his head. Ā If only she knew about old; feeling old. The march of centuries weighed heavily on him at that moment. To distract himself as much as to compliment his prospective employer, he said, āYou donāt look it.ā
āYouāre too kind,ā she said, but he knew he had reached her with that. āOh, to be as young as you.ā
Gold chuckled. āHardly,ā he said. āFifty two isnāt young, Miss Evers.ā
āWell, you look good for it, Sheridan.ā
āDan is fine,ā he told her, suddenly feeling like Sheridan was such a mouthful, and at that moment, sitting in a routine job interview, for a normalĀ job, he was enjoying feeling ordinary; inconspicuous.
Far from inconspicuous was the sudden noise coming from beyond the window behind the head teacher, and he looked that way to see a handful of rambunctious students in untidy uniforms following a woman not much taller than they. She wore a plaid green plaid skirt with cream colored, woolen tights beneath; a grass green blouse and a dark blue, almost black cardigan over it all. Ā Her chestnut hair was piled atop her head, and lit almost aflame by the sun that bathed the seemingly impromptu educational party.
For many long moments he sat, as if mesmerized, unable to look away, finding himself warmed by the beauty that graced her as she laughed at something one of the students said.
Miss Evers turn to glance in the same direction, a knowing smile drawing a blush to his face as he said, āAh, thatās Isabelle, our librarian, and French teacher. Unique among our staff and the students adore her.ā He thought, and tried not to remark that he doubted they were the only ones, which only served to deepen his blush. āShe always seems to prefer al fresco education - rain or shine. Ā They really engage.ā
āIt seems like you all do wonderful things here,ā he said, pointedly trying to draw the attention away from his obvious admiration for the librarian turned teacher.
āWe do our best, Dan,ā Evers said, ābut somehow we feel like weāre pushing that boulder up the ever present mountain of inner city disadvantage.ā Ā She sighed. āThatās the only thing that worries me, I have to be honest.ā At his puzzled expression she added, āAbout your application.ā
āAh,ā he said, feeling suddenly crestfallen, his stomach knotting in fading hope.
āDonāt get me wrong, Mister Gold,ā her switch back to a more formal address did not fill him with confidence. āI heard from all your references and I canāt fault them. Theyāre impeccable.ā He sighed with relief. At least Cambridge had done right by him in that regard. Heād been highly worried that she wouldnāt. āBut⦠well - this isĀ the inner city, and not an affluent comprehensive out in the suburbs.ā
āPardon me saying,ā he interrupted, ābut kids are kids.ā
She nodded agreement, āAnd our kids, as youāve seen,ā she gestured through the window once more where the teacher and her class seemed intent on studying something low on the ground. Ā He quickly looked away again. It wasnāt seemly for him to suddenly be thinking about the alluring curve of the diminutive educator, āour kids are great, but they donāt have those same privileges, and⦠well⦠I worry that youāve led too sheltered a life to appreciate that.ā
He let out a sudden burst of humorless laughter, adding, āYouād be surprised,ā to the end of it, so as not to appear too manic; too desperate.
āMister Goldāā
āDan.ā
āDan,ā she nodded then continued, āMost of our students struggle so much to understand the present⦠the world around them. Ā Their reality. Ā How do you hope to get them engaged with the past; to bring history to life.ā
Rumplestiltskin smiled. She could have asked him no easier question. āMiss Evers,ā he began, āI donāt needĀ to bring history to life, because it already lives. It isnāt abstract tales of kings and queens, politics and wars. Itās you, and me⦠itās those students and their families. Your shirt, for example. You could explain the whole history of colonialism, imperialism and slavery. Ā The blood, sweat and tears that brought us to being able to walk into Marks and Spencers and pick out a shirt for work or school⦠itās incredible when you think about it.ā
She fiddled with the collar of her shirt, and he knew heād made her uncomfortable and should have regretted it. Ā He didnāt, just raised an eyebrow at her look of almost guilt. Ā Evidently heād hit the mark on where she shopped for her work clothing.
āMy point is,ā he continued, āItās all around us - history. Itās a partĀ of us, and teaching it is just about making people understand that. Ā Everyone loves history!ā
She raised an eyebrow. āYou think?ā
āI know.ā he corrected. āItās about making people see that who they are now, is becauseĀ of what came before.ā Ā He gestured to the window, and asked, āMay I?ā
She nodded, a look of intrigue on her face, and as he stood to walk to the window, she too stood from her chair and followed him.
āThat building over there,ā he gestured to a drab, depressing looking building with tall towers on one corner and an even taller chimney. āIt used to be a mental hospital - an asylum - did you know that?ā Ā She shook her head, āAnd that one,ā he pointed not too far away from it, to a building he knew was on the next street over. āA slaughterhouse. Ā Did you know a couple of hundred years ago they took the bones of those slaughtered animals, ground them up and made porcelain from them?ā He didnāt wait for her to answer, just went on, āIf we just turned back time and walked that street we would hearĀ the lowing and the wailing of people and cattle each condemned to madness and death.ā
āYou certainly have a macabre way of putting things, Dan,ā she murmured, and he worried he had traveled just a little too far to the darker side of history, but he shrugged.
āNot too far from here is where the suffragettes used to meet. A turning point, a real changeĀ for good.ā
āI see from your resume that you knit,ā she changed the subject.
āI do,ā he said, āand weave, and even spin.ā
āYou put Helen to shame.ā
āHelen?ā
āOur domestic sciences teacher. Ā Canāt even iron a shirt without putting more wrinkles inĀ than sheās taking out, let alone make or sew clothing.ā
āWell I love to,ā he said, āespecially to spin my own wool, but I find it hard to talk about. Hard to teach.ā
āUnlike history?ā
āAbsolutely,ā he said. āUnlike history.ā
āAnd the curriculum?ā she said, āYouāre up to date.ā
He nodded. A lie. Ā He had downloaded the document, but hadnāt ready it. The time at the computer had given him a headache enough without plowing his way through something he knew was going to be drier than dust.
āWellā¦ā she seemed to have one more reservation. āFor a history teacher, youāre a bit on the youngĀ side.ā
He almost jumped back in surprise.
āIām fifty two,ā he reminded her. Ā Going on several centuries - older than you can count. he didnāt say. āA rather oldĀ fifty two.ā
She smiled then, and seemed to be considering something, considering him, and he did likewise, thinking of himself in terms of the lifetimes, the generations he had lived before the curse⦠after the curse in Cambridgeās thrall⦠each year lived, each moment past made it harder yet to live in the present, in the moment without darkening your soul. Eternity was little more than a progression of moments in the present, ignoring the ghosts of the past to try to live.
He gave himself a mental shake, the voices encroaching on him again - the murmuring, hissing annoyance of all those centuries past, all those lives, the voice of all the Dark Ones before him. Ā It had been happening a lot of late, the more years he suffered since the curse, the more it seemed the past wanted to catch him up and crush him before he could reach his goal, before he couldā
He had to concentrate, to hold on to the inconspicuous, to the ordinary - to normal.
Miss Evers shook her head and gave a little laugh, lost, it seemed, in past moments of her own. Ā Was it as dangerous for her as for him?
āI have to say, Dan, Iām impressed with this application - very impressed.ā She blushed then, and lowered her voice to make her confession, āIāve been somewhat suspicious of why someone with your credentials would apply to our struggling little school. Ā Youāre frankly everything weāve been looking for, and⦠well⦠even if you werenāt, youād still be getting the job.ā
āOh?ā he asked, his own suspicions somewhat stirred.
āNo other applicants,ā she explained with an apologetic smile.
He could not help but laugh at that. Ā It was probably the most ordinary thing that could have happened to him in that moment, and his laughter was, apparently infectious, because Miss Evers apologetic smile, became first a nervous, and then more hearty laughter to join with his own.
The laughter soon died though as Evers shared, āThereās a plaque on my street, you know, right there on the corner below the street name.ā
āThere is?ā he asked, though the prickling along his spine told him he shouldnāt.
She nodded, and returned to her desk to sit and take a sip on her coffee. Ā He followed her lead, retaking his seat across the desk from her. āThere were many plague victims who died on that street. One of the worst hit areas of the city apparently.ā
Memory laced with pain assaulted him at the mention of plague. It surprised him with its vehemence because he had long since laid that memory, and his feelings for his former wife - indeed his former wife herself - to rest. Ā Milah was nothing to him any more. Ā Worse than nothing if he were honest. Ā Forgotten remnants of a cuckolded past laced with hate.
āI see,ā he said mildly, pushing the thought away, and forced a smile to his face. āYou see, I told you that we areĀ history.ā
She chuckled again. āI have a feeling about you, Dan, and arenāt we supposed to listen to our instincts?ā
āI suppose,ā he agreed, though he wasnāt sure that he agreed. Ā Feelings had never been helpful for the Dark One⦠had always led him astray, in fact - his own at least. Ā Some of his best deals had been made when he was hard and cold, calculating. No room for feelings in that. No⦠feelings were the opposite of everything he stood for⦠Werenāt they?
He found his eyes flicked through the window again, to where Isabelle was moving among the students, speaking to each with little touches here and there that reminded him of someone. But no⦠that someone was dead. Regina had told him so.
He smiled and stood, āWell⦠if thereās nothing else, Miss Evers, I will⦠see you in August, I suppose.ā
āOf course,ā she, too, stood. āBut August will be here before you know it, Dan. Thatās another thing about getting older,ā she added sagely. āTime goes by faster.ā
āOr not,ā he whispered, looking down at his hands, his normalĀ hands. In that moment he missed the claws and scales.
Everās must not have heard, because she added, āAnd children.ā The words jolted him from his growing self loathing.
āI beg your pardon?ā he said.
āChildren,ā she repeated. āI have three. The oldest is in her twenties, and I promise you time has flown. Ā Only yesterday she was playing dress-up with princess dresses, and next week sheās moving in with her girlfriend⦠a house of their own. Ā Can you imagine?ā She shook her head. āDo you have any?āĀ
Another flash of memory and pain. Ā He wanted to say no, but he couldnāt deny Baelfire. Wouldnāt.
āA son,ā he told her. āBut⦠I lost him.ā He didnāt understand why he would tell that to a complete stranger, especially when he knew she would take it wrongly. āI mean⦠I donāt know where he is. We lost touch.ā
He turned away from the awkward, sympathetic expression on her face. He couldnāt stand her pity. Ā Heād find Bae⦠one way or another, and with or without Cambridgeās help. He heard Miss Evers shift in her seat, and glanced at her again to see she looked as if she were about to make some kind of comment. Instead she simply said, āSee you soon, Mister Gold.ā
With a nod, he stepped out beyond the threshold of her door, turned to look along the corridor to watch as two teenagers who had been standing, heads together, thick as thieves, looking at their phones, scurry away like cockroaches.
āYes,ā he said aloud but quietly. āSee you soon.ā
He left the school and prepared to walk the mile or so back to his modest home - a town house, two up two down - but he couldnāt help feeling as though he were walking with one foot still in the Enchanted Forest. He had not experienced that sense of dislocation in a long time. It bothered him. Everything like that had meaning.
He took the long way home, and it took him down by the wharf, another painful reminder of a past that seemed ever to be encroaching in the new, cursed life in which Cambridge had trapped him with her interference and her false promises.  He should have crushed her like the bug she was centuries ago; when she first gave Baelfire the bean.  His head began to ache - an understatement for it pounded like the painful beating of his heart. Another symptom of living in a world without magic⦠as if that magic were trying to reach across worlds and pull him back; enticing - daring him to try and reach for it, even knowing that he could not.
Wearied, dizzy, he reached out to try and support himself on something - anything - nearby. He leaned against the hood of a nearby car, only lightly, but the car alarm still sounded and to him was like the one of many wails of pain out of that long dead time in the Enchanted Forest, reaching through worlds and through time. He pushed away from the car, escaped from its insistent cacophony, only wishing he could walk away from the cacophony of pain-born memories just as easily.
Since I try not to read fic and write it at the same time, I'm way behind on reading. Is there a fic that you haven't been asked about lately that you are really into and want to share some info on? Happy to hear anything about it from the planning and plotting process to your frustrations for a scene you are stuck on. Anything will do, just happy to hear from you.
Hey! Thank you for the ask!
Oh, so many to choose from - how about I give you two, one book AU and one TV show crossover AU? (And I think these are both ones that you put me on the path to, so... appropriate.)
The book AU - Time's Curse is an AU of How To Stop Time by Matt Haig. I have an outline (f I can still find it) of the first twelve or so chapters. I'm going to need to read the book again before I can plan any further than that. The thing that's been the biggest issue in this whole thing is 'casting' as it were - you know, which Once character is going to be which character from the book, I mean, Bae is obvious - although as I'm tying this I'm having a moment of 'what if...' - to be the person Rumple is searching for before he runs into French teacher Belle at the school where he starts working. The one I am having the hardest time with is Jefferson, surprisingly enough, but as a 'portal jumper' I think I know what might work well given some of Jefferson's backstory (Once) and this mysterious person who Tom's (Rumple) character tries to stop being hurt at the end, where he also 'finds' the one he's been looking for. Which is as much as I can say really without giving massive spoilers for the whole story. But it's been a lot of fun working through each of the moments in the book, and adapting them so that our beloved Once characters can fit and it can also make sense in terms of the story that I'm using for the AU.
The TV show AU is Modern Wonders, which is a Once/Alice (2009) crossover. I'm having great fun with this one, though, I'm /still/ not 100% sure how I'm going to have Storybrooke fit into this version of Wonderland. Without too big of a spoiler - I'm very excited over the twist I have for Archie, our dear sweet cricket, and psychiatrist of Storybrooke. Alice as well... beyond the obvious, but... when I get to outline a little bit more of this, I think I'll be more comfortable about mixing Once timelines and events from all of the seasons into one big mess. Maybe that's the 'magic'/'curse' of Wonderland after all. I do know that our friend the portal jumper will be instrumental in this story as well... and we're playing to his dark side in this one, and that's a whole heck of a lot of fun.
Have I sufficiently muddied the waters? LOL. I could be more specific if I were sitting with the outlines themselves. I loved this ask though, especially as I was thinking of implementing a "behind the scenes" kind of post for the fics I'm writing, like I used to do.
There are a lot of questions I have that became pretty much head canon in this story.
Parts of this gave me Jefferson as an antagonist vibe big time. Iām sitting on the muse to stop that from becoming a thing, but I mean, just look at the expression on his face.
āFYI - Regina is evil.

Second,,,
I started something a little new, and therefore a little daunting. Yesterday I posted the first chapter of a multi-crossover fic. Why new, you ask?Ā Well first of all I didnāt used to do crossovers - although I guess it could be argued that anything ending inĀ āelleā except Rumbelle is by its very nature a crossover, but that feels a little more organic. With this fic I am including a number of different and/or similar shows. Itās also daunting because I know there are a huge number of Marvel fans out there that might stumble across this fic who may or may not enjoy the way I write Bucky... cracking open that door is a little nerve-wracking. So let me be upfront about a couple of things - do I believe Bucky is Bi? Absolutely.Ā Do I ship him with Sam and/or Steve? No. It is what it is, folks.
(Also on a side note about the fic - theĀ ā24ā² part of the crossover has absolutely NOTHING - ZERO - ZIP to do with Jack Bauer. It is non canon, and the focus is a different character entirely.
Today marks the start of the second week of NaNoWriMo 2021. Iām struggling a bit, to be honest, so Iām trying really hard not to get frustrated at the low wordcount and missing goals. Iām still a little bit behind.
My focus fics this year are Disparate Pathways, and Cobra: In Your Prayers, the crossover fic I speak about above, and which came about thanks to @peacehopeandrats.Ā
So, here goes with this weeks hopeful wishes.Ā
Monday - The Monday Menu & āMissed itā Monday
Tuesday - TMI Tuesday.
Wednesday - WIP Wednesday.
Thursday - Three Things Thursday.
Friday - Final Line Friday.
Saturday - Secret Saturday.
Sunday - Seven Sentence Sunday. Ā
Writing this week: I will be working on writing The next chapter of Disparate Pathways, The first chapter of Cobra: In Your Prayers, and then after that, the next chapter of Ā Storybrookeās Best Kept Secret.
Posting today will be the next chapter of Disparate Pathways, andĀ this weekend will be the next chapter of Timeās Curse.
As always my inbox is open for thoughts, questions, asks⦠I donāt restrict people to any particular day of the week, and I - like most fic authors - love to discuss things to do with fics and OUAT.
A HUGE thank you to those readers who have left comments on AO3, If I havenāt answered them yet, I will.
Yes, it took me forever and a day to think of that post title, which is one reason why itās a day late LOL
So, as some of you may, or may not know, (and if you donāt, you will in a minute), that I started a new job just over a week ago - now a fully fledged teacher and not a teacherās assistant any more.Ā Still with special needs, but I am a resource teacher for the kids in General Education classes that have some kind of... well... special need. (Autism, behavior, ADHD etc). So thatās why Iāve been quiet for a long time. The whole, getting qualified, finding a job, and now getting settled /in/ to the job... phew, itās a lot of work.
So Iām going to try and figure things out with a new schedule, even if some days posts have to be scheduled, and I answer in the evenings... so..Ā
Monday - The Monday Menu. This will give a brief and Iām sure somewhat apocryphalĀ plan for the week.
Tuesday - TMI Tuesday. All asks are very welcome, about fics or /anything/.
Wednesday - WIP Wednesday. Updates on current WIPs, as usual
Thursday - Three Things Thursday. Here Iāll choose a fic, and tell three things about it, and then invite you, dear readers, to ask for 3 things you want to know about any other fics (or the same one if youād like).
Friday - Final Line Friday. Will give you a word cloud, and the final line from the last fic I wrote for this week.
Saturday - Secret Saturday. A character, a fic, and I will share a secret from that characterās backstory in some way. It may be an image, it may be a cryptic comment, it may be a line of dialogue. Unless someone asks for a specific character, and/or fic, the choice will be random.
Sunday - Seven Sentence Sunday. Okay, full disclosure here, I am shamelessly stealing this idea from @deliriumsdelight7 (though I think maybe theirs was Six Sentence Sunday. Just what it saysĀ āon the boxā as it were.Ā Seven sentences, chosen at random from a fic also chosen at random, that Iāve been writing that week. If someone wants to send a request, however, check with The Monday Menu to see what fics Iām planning on working on that week, and have at it.
Thatās my plan for Tumblr, anyway.
As far as writing is concerned, Iām currently working on The Pawn Shop On Main Street, and after that will come Timeās Curse.
And for posting this weekend, At the moment I havenāt really got a clue. I do have chapters of several fics ready to post, so, look for something late Saturday, and late Sunday (or maybe even Monday).
Happy Thursday everyone. One whole week of camp down, a few more to go.

Three things about the fic I am currently writing, Disparate Pathways - chapter 26
We finally get to see Belleās introduction to Gold
Gold and Jefferson have a little bit of a standoff
There are a /lot/ of things that are no spoken in this chapter, but which are hovering there in the subtext, and in the background.

The next three fics I shall work on will be, All Our Past Mistakes, Scattered, and the RSGE fic.
So, please feel free to ask for three things about these fics, or any of my other fics, whether about characters, writerās process, even just me.

Whatever questions are in your mind, about anything, Iāll answer, or the characters will.
Have fun, and send asks, the more questions, the merrier the blog,
It seems like, like me, you have a blend of fics whose story you come up with yourself, and Rumbelle adaptations of pre-existing works. Iām curious about your thought process for the latter. Is there any particular quality you look for (or stumble across) in a work that makes you want to adapt it? A character beat, an atmosphere, a certain type of interaction between characters that makes you think, āyeah, I want to Rumbelle this?ā Or does it happen seemingly at random?
Thank you, thank you, thank you for this lovely ask.
So far, both the fics (The Library Beneath the Clock Tower and Time's Curse) that are Rumbelle adaptations have been books that @peacehopeandrats have said to me, "This is /so/ Rumbelle, look!" and I have gone and read the books, and found that I agree with them.
For me... hmmm, thinking as I write this answer, it's both a character thing, and a 'I can see Rumbelle getting themselves into this kind of situation' and so when things like that leaped up and bit me from my reading, I was like, YES this will be perfect.
To be specific, in Library, it was /everything/... well... except that the physical description of Lennox was more like Gaston than Gold, but in temperament the other way around. But the events that happened, the way the push and pull of character interaction, it was just so perfectly Rumbelle it was impossible not to see. @peacehopeandrats used to joke that the writer had written a Rumbelle fic and then changed the names.
Time's Curse is firstly atmospheric Rumbelle, and mostly Rumplestiltskin/Gold that screams Rumbelle in How to Stop Time, but there are many more factors that squeezed my little Rumbelle heart into wanting to Rumbelle it. It is also prompting quite a different 'authorial voice' while writing. It's proving to be interesting.
So I guess the real answer is, it depends. If there is anything about a particular source that screams Rumbelle, I'll go to bat for investigating if there is enough to make a whole fic out of it.
Another 'fun fact' (related to this idea, but also not related) is 'how can I spin Jefferson. For example, which aspect of Jefferson's character (madness/father/friend/queer/dangerous etc.) can I play with in any given fic. It is a lot of fun, for me - and it's not always , 'slap you upside the head.' It can often be too subtle to notice, but... it's a consideration, a question I ask myself every time I write something involving Jefferson - you're not necessarily going to get one trait accented through an entire fic, sometimes it will change from chapter to chapter, sometimes even scene to scene, and THAT, my friend, has very little to do with canon writing, and everything to do with Sebastian Stan.
I know you didn't ask about that, but I felt it was fair to add, and maybe even mildly interesting :D
