Time-Lapse Research
The photographic technique of taking a sequence of frames at set intervals to record changes that take place slowly over time. When the frames are shown at normal speed the action seems much faster. For example showing the construction of a building or cars traveling along the motorway. I really like this demonstration of time based media, as this shows more and for me is much more interesting. Also it makes you want to keep watching as something different is always happening in a time-lapse. On the other hand my previous ideas to use cinemagraphs or gifs are not as engaging for me, even thought I prefer the look of a cinemagraph.
This is a time-lapse of Dubai in winter. I just like how there is always something happening and so much to look at. For example in the video you can see all of the traffic on the roads and all of the boats in the docks. It is just busy everywhere
In this video you can see that time-lapses can be used for many different things, for example, construction videos for business purposes to show how quickly and efficiently they can build a skyscrapers for instance. Or just to show the process of building this masterpiece. Another example is this airport, as this could be used again for business purposes so that air traffic control can keep a record of how many planes have used the airpot in a day. Or just for amusement to the public to see how it looks for multiple planes to leave an airport during rush hour.
This is why I have changed my idea for my final piece to be a time-lapse now rather than a cinemagraph, as I find the amount of things that can go on on one time-lapse fascinating.

“Life is a life sentence. Life is passing time. Life is free thinking.”- artist Tehching Hsieh
Rewind is a film depicting a subject’s reclaiming of youth, made in response to artist Hsieh’s extraordinary piece One Year Performance. Hsieh’s performance piece captures the meaning of life as a measurement of time through a series of 8,267 mugshot-like photographs of himself. Viewers are subject to watch the gradual, physical effects of time on the individual, suggesting that no matter what we do in our life, time is inescapable. Rewind refutes Hsieh’s concept by suggesting that time is merely a concept, able to be reclaimed through how we live our life, and the way we perceive of ourselves.
The initial impression in the film allows audiences to see the repetitive nature of growing old and the mundane activities that revolve around this process and the shots and editing reflecting on this elderly lifestyle. The use of walking and a bus as transportation can be indicative of the journey of life and the development of our character regaining her youth and purity similar to a child's. The evolving process can be seen as she travels and finds herself at a destination that can be linked to childhood - the beach. The final stages show our character demonstrating the final stages of the regeneration of youth as she strips off the clothes that make her appear older. We have made our character stand between a pole to show the clear line that separates the elderly from the youthful.
The medium of film was selected due to its ability to convey a retrospective perspective merging the past and present. The first scene is out of focus to demonstrate the blur between the past and present with reality shifting sharply back into focus as the character places her glasses on. The use of black and white effects contrasts the present against a historical context and is magnified through commercials, both vintage and contemporary. Film and editing techniques convey the societal impact the media has on the construction of self-identity and how these projections can both shape and challenge these ideals. The audience is encouraged to reflect on their own identity through the use of close-up character shots. The use of handheld shots creates an authentic appeal allowing the audience to relate readily.
