“i feel like i know you. like we’ve met before.”

For a moment, hope. He knows it’s technically impossible for anyone to remember other worldlines, but for an instant, he is willing to believe the impossible. He’d won already. He’d tricked the world and created the dreamed-of world where Kurisu and Mayuri could both survive. He’d convinced himself that he was okay with that. He just needed to know that he and Kurisu both existed in the same worldine. Hope feels like a grip around his throat, strangling the life out of him. His breath catches in his throat. He almost feels sick with the damned hope.
“W-we… I…”
Oh, how he aches for her. He can’t deny it. He wants to hold her the way he did on their last day together. The subtle recognition in her gaze almost spurs him to embrace her, but the rational part of him holds him back. No. Don’t you dare do this to her. Kurisu deserves her own happiness. Her own chance. Don’t drag her into a world she’s not even familiar with.
That damned hope.
“C-could it be the red string of fate? Or perhaps I’ve just enraptured you with my charisma? You’d make a fantastic sacrifice for my experiments!”
His heart isn’t in it. He can barely call on Houhouin Kyouma to diffuse the situation. His normal strategies don’t work when she’s involved. His controlled posture drops. He can’t keep up the facade. He doesn’t want to hurt her. He wants her with him. He doesn’t want to hold her back. He wants to tell her everything. He wants to tell her he loves her. He wants her to love him.
It’s a cruel thing, hope. It fills you up and when it dies all you feel is the space where it used to be.
“Then again… Maybe not.”
