Why Has Beauty Been Stolen From The People? We Are All One Family.  

We are at a time in history when we have the technology and ability to live in a Utopia if we wanted to. As much as he is often criticized for his radical views, Kanye tells us an important message in this video: We are all one family.

We need to mobilize as a people and stop separating ourselves from one another and “othering” each other. We have “othered” to the point where we can walk past a person on the street, on the brink of death and we don’t even bat an eye. We have “othered” to the point where someone is begging you with every ounce of their soul and you don’t even acknowledge their existence. We have “othered” to the point where the only love and connection afforded to some people is from their pets. This needs to end today and as much as this is a systemic issue, the stereotypes and attitudes towards homelessness perpetuates the problem.

There are things you can do to change this starting today. You can start in the way that you speak about homelessness. You can start by saying “person experiencing homelessness” instead of labelling them with stereotypes such a hobo or bum. You can start by acknowledging those experiencing homelessness as you walk by, start looking at them as a human being versus a street object. You can start by telling that uncle of yours, who constantly talks about welfare cheats and lazy bums, that homelessness is a problem created and maintained by the system. Tell him that we live in society where minimum wage and social supports do not equate to the skyrocketing cost of living. 

This is an issue that needs systemic change but that change can start at the individual level. Without the 99%, the 1% cannot survive. All throughout history we have seen revolutions take place, this is NOT a sustainable system. Change will happen.
