That scene in 1x02 where Lucy is standing there grieving and Jiya offers to help her find out why Amy disappeared gets me every time. It’s her face when she turns around and asks, ever so softly: “you would do that for me?” It’s like she’s not used to being treated with anything more then basic politeness, like she’s not used to receiving kindness back.
Similarly, I really don’t find that scene in 2x03 where Wyatt lets her think he’s not calling her beautiful as a joke cute. Because deep down, she doesn’t believe she’s good enough, whatever good enough means in that moment.
(Except for, probably, her academic achievement. But that’s because she worked very hard for a long time. It’s earned, not inherent.)
I fully blame Carol, but also we never hear about her having any friends before the Time Team? She probably got along well with some of her coworkers but it doesn’t seem like any of those relationships survived the job change, even pre-bunker. Was Amy the only person she could consistently rely on? I think she was. And isn’t it terrible that, even with all of them living together, after she was stabbed in the 17th century, apparently no one noticed she was developing a severe infection until she was delirious, and she didn’t want to say anything? Of course it surprises her a then-stranger would see helping her as worthwhile. She isn’t used to the kind of love that puts her first.
(...I didn’t even mean to make this a shipping post, but that’s one of the reasons I love Garcy so much. Flynn’s other priorities are saving his wife and child and destroying the evil secret society that killed them, and she still makes it to the top of his list by 2x10,)
