The announcement
It was time to announce that I had decided to close our Hillsboro location.
It was also time to be creative with the story. This was to make sure that this went smoothly and it did not have such a damaging effect. The story was true that I was spread to thin, that I wanted to be more focused, that I wanted to get back to cycling everywhere and be that a bigger part of the Concord community again.
What I left out of our announcement was that I was depressed everyday that I had to go to Hillsboro. It was a mental battle to make the trip out because I knew I did not want to be there. Part of this was that every time I went to teach in Hillsboro it reminded me of my instructor who passed and it just hurt. The other thing that I left out of the announcement was that I was hemorrhaging money like crazy. This school was continuing to struggle because I never wanted to be there, was not involved in the community and was not marketing appropriately. I was always late on rent with the new landlord even after he granted me a reduced rent.
Some of the students were upset and some were relieved. Some of the parents were upset, others confused. Some were inquisitive, others felt relieved to not get away from an additional commitment.
We announced to our students that we were closing about seven weeks before our last class day. We did not want to surprise them a week before and thought this timeline would be most appropriate.
Those seven weeks felt like forever… It was the right thing to do.
Time to get rid of all of the equipment, furniture, training gear and move out. Let the madness commence…
