the main thing i disagree with in a lot of criticisms of the timewar in the 50th, and moffat era generally, is...
i do feel like it’s just (narratively, not ethically) wrong to have gallifrey destroyed.
i liked when the doctor and the master and the rani and all those renegades had a homeworld culture to rebel against. i like when they have to team up against the council, or to at least keep them at arm’s length.
if we don’t have gallifreyan culture representing some of the worst elements of human cultures, then we’re left with the doctor, a superior alien, telling earth people what we’re doing wrong. and that’s... just colonialism all over again. but if you have whichever protagonist notices any given thing calling out whoever when they’re being awful and everybody helping everybody else as needed... idk, it seems better that way.
when donna or bill or other companions call the doctor on their hypocrisy, yeah. that’s good content.
but completely aside from them being a flawed individual, we ALSO need the reminders that the doctor is still an alien in their own culture, that they’re not just an alien for us, they’re a neurodivergent “back home” too. people can be both. we can let our freak flag fly and ALSO need reminders not to be a jerk.
not sure if i actually arrived at any points here but whatever...
if anybody needs to shout at me please do it in messages not reblogs. i’m not up for shouting in reblogs this week.
