Tell me why, tell me why, tell me why Why can't we live together No matter, no matter what color You are still my brother Everybody wants to live together Why can't we live together

SUNDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO “Love is Strange (a lo-fi live just-for fun rehearsal)”—The Farm in San Francisco was literally a farm, a madcap complex wedged between a maze of freeway ramps, industries, gas stations, and a ball park. The byzantine building included performance spaces (I heard Prince visited once). My band October rehearsed and made demo recordings at The Farm, sharing the space with my pal Dan Rielly (later of Funk Dub Division). Our bassist-singer Victor Valverde was inspired by Timmy Thomas’s “Why Can’t We Live Together” and he got the bug we should do “Love is Strange” in that style. Our lo-fi rehearsal appeared on a compilation (re-posted by tape archivist Matthew Hunt).

About this time in 1956, the original “Love is Strange” by Mickey & Sylvia was rising on the charts. It was written by Bo Diddley (as “Ethel Smith” his then-wife) and has been covered and copied countless times. For our version we switched it from the standard major key to minor key and added a bossa-nova beat, a gospel intent, and a retro drum machine. Ron Davis played drums & timbales, I played Vox electric 12-string guitar w/built-in tremolo, and Victor played bass and sang a powerful lead. Bridget Purifoy and Anna Valdez sang harmonies. Later we played this arrangement live…

[Verse 1]
It's turning out just another day
I took a shower and I went on my way
I stopped there as usual
Had a coffee and pie
When I turned to leave
I couldn't believe my eyes
Standing there I didn't know what to say
Without one touch
We stood there face to face
[Chorus]
(And) I was dying inside to hold you
I couldn't believe what I felt for you
Dying inside, I was dying inside
But I couldn't bring myself to touch you
[Verse 2]
You said hello then you asked my name
I didn't know if I should go all the way
Inside, I felt my life have really changed
I knew that it would never be the same
Standing there, I didn't know what to say
First time, looked away when I whispered your name
[Chorus]
(And) I was dying inside to hold you
I couldn't believe what I felt for you
Dying inside, I was dying inside
But I couldn't bring myself to touch you
(And) I was dying inside to hold you
I couldn't believe what I felt for you
Dying inside I was dying inside
But I couldn't bring myself to touch you
[Bridge]
One hello changed my life
I didn't believe in love at first sight
But you've shown me what is life
And now I know my love (I know it's coming right)
[Chorus]
(And) I was dying inside to hold you
I couldn't believe what I felt for you
Dying inside, I was dying inside
But I couldn't bring myself to touch you
