chapter 31 of aijad had adverse effects upon my psyche
florida boy braves maine weather and almost immediately freezes to death
stebbins’ first job was at an escape room super close to his house. he always got bored as hell having to correct people falling for the same red herrings in the same damn room every hour of every day for $15 an hour until these seven idiots waltz in one day and just. desecrate the room. their combined problem solving is so out of the box that it isn’t even problem solving anymore and their group dynamics are more complicated than a democrat-republican family reunion.
the first time they come, they don’t solve a single clue and only succeed in simulating an indoors tornado, but despite never before breaking character over the microphone, this time he couldn’t help but laugh over the intercom. better yet, the first time he laughs, the guys immediately give up any feeble attempt to solve anything and pivot to trying to entertain him instead.
and then they just keep coming back, no matter the fact that the room itself never changes. they visibly perk up when they hear his voice even though it’s always him. he’s never felt so included in a group, or wanted to be part of a group so much, even though he’s never been in the same room as these people and they don’t even know his name or what he looks like. the anonymity is actually what makes him able to be so comfortable with them.
yet every time they come to the room, they get closer to actually escaping, and stebbins gets increasingly terrified with the realization that this weird sort of friend group he’s made will have no reason to come back. he begins to dread their visits because he knows the end is near.
and finally, the boys solve the room and escape. the atmosphere is off and they’re not nearly as happy as they should be to solve the mystery they’ve been working so hard on for months. stebbins congratulates them. ray looks like he wants to say something, but doesn’t. they leave.
the next day, stebbins is walking through the campus cafeteria and sees them. six guys talking and laughing around a cafeteria table, like friendship is the most natural thing in the world. then he’s nudged harshly to the side. he turns, and-
barkovitch.
startled, stebbins blurts out a weak “what” and barkovitch pivots so hard he almost twists his ankle. they gape at each other and then barkovitch drags him over to the lunch table and they live happily ever after or whatever
