ok so i didn’t think i was into wintersroe but the power dynamics are kind of fucked up in a fun awesome way n your service series is a really nice encapsulation of my feelings about them (i mean this 100% as a compliment it’s awesome i love it)

i’m ace so i tend to read nsfw sparingly but the way you explore their dynamic is so good i couldn’t resist

I'm so honored that you like it despite not reading a lot of NSFW! Being on the ace spectrum myself and writing a LOT of smut I actually have some thoughts on this (being ace and enjoying&writing NSFW stories) so I will expand under the cut!

I've found that my enjoyment of NSFW fics and smut in general varies a LOT and depends strongly on there being some kind of dynamic I can get into that goes beyond physical or romantic attraction.

You'd think that this is universal, or at least I used to think this because most stories are explorations of some kind of compelling dynamic between characters! But I've recently been forced by my friends to read a published romantasy book series with lots of sex scenes and let me tell you I was bored out of my mind because it was all just "oh he's horrible to me but he's SO FUCKING HOT WE ARE HAVING SEX NOW". I simply could not relate, and so the sex scenes just kinda fell flat for me.

(Another reason is probably that I don't enjoy most het romance dynamics where the man treats the woman horribly and gets excused for it - it happens too much in real life for me to enjoy without some kind of interesting take on it beyond "he's hot and misunderstood")

I'm sure that this preference isn't exclusive to people on the ace spectrum, the world is infinitely nuanced etc etc - the book is hugely popular though and my friends loved the sex scenes and said they're better than what they're used to from other published books in the genre (🫠). The focus of these scenes was mostly the physical aspect of sex and not so much the underlying character dynamics, so I think that played a huge part as well.

I think smut in general benefits greatly from having some kind of secondary emotional dynamic to lean on, either something sicko like Dick's guilt and the imbalanced power dynamics in this case or something like hurt/comfort where the sex is a kind of stand in for emotional release/catharsis or a vehicle for character analysis. There's so many ways to make smut interesting, compelling, moving and hot, even if sex isn't something you (the reader or the author) want or enjoy in real life.

When I write, smut in particular, I usually try to chase and evoke a specific feeling or emotion - desperation, guilt, relief, grief, fear and so on that complements the horniness and is tied up with it. I'm so happy that this resonated with you enough to come talk with me about it, and I hope you'll stick around for the sequel (when it eventually happens)

OK! Have a Skinnyrenee rarepair headcanon!

There's some Skinny lore floating around that he was a pretty rough character, doing manual labor, fighting a lot, chasing women, not a churchgoer etc. but that he changed his ways and eventually became a minister, in part due to what happened in Bastogne.

My headcanon for Skinnyrenee is that he thinks he'll die and then gets saved by two literal angels, Gene and Renée! And while he's at the aid station he falls in love with Renée and that's what sets the foundation for becoming a minister later in life! In my mind she's the one who inspires him to serve others and change his ways!

This is the premise for my skinnyrenee video, and also for the poll steal fanfiction that I didn't finish in time for the last round but will be resurrected for the next one!

Bonus Headcanon I just came up with: Skinny doesn't know at first that Renée died, and he finds out because he sees her headscarf on Babe's hand, confronts him about it, then confronts Gene about it and then they fuck over their shared grief. Babe can be there too. Baberoeskinnyrenee polycule!

Yes!!! I am so obsessed with Baberoenee right now actually it's not even funny!! I'm guessing you've already seen my edit for them as well as the fanfictions I wrote over on my AO3 :)

Baberoespina I support but I'll have to admit except for reading the incredible two medics in one hole fic (https://archiveofourown.org/works/30066372) I haven't really engaged with that ship much! I do love Spina but to me he falls more in the same category as Bill, as a friend who's party to the baberoe shenanigans more so than a participant, just a personal preference for sure. But always open to discuss and let myself be convinced if you have thoughts of your own 😇
