So I was thinking just now, and realized just how much harder it was for the sons of Fëanor to see the Sindar withholding the Silmaril from them compared to Morgoth.
Morgoth's case was obvious. He was their enemy. Their dark foe, and someone they shouldn't have expected to be able to talk and reason with. They wanted him destroyed and nothing more.
But the Sindar were supposed to be their kin and their friends. Sure, there was bad blood between them, but was it strong enough to want to keep the sons' birthright and stolen property from them at the expense of what could have easily turned into a bloody feud?
I'm sorry, but the Sindar were just as guilty in the Kinslayings as a whole. Maedhros tried to negotiate terms with them every time, but they still kept to their stubborn ways and brought war to their own doorsteps knowingly.
And honestly, in my eyes at least, it's way worse it to lust for a jewel when you don't have an oath hanging around your neck compelling you to shed blood for it. The sons of Fëanor had no choice, and it doesn't excuse their crimes. Their supposed kin turned enemy had every chance to just end it by giving up something that didn't even belong to them, but they still didn't do it.
I'm not saying the sons of Fëanor are blameless so don't put words in my mouth, but I'm saying that we should hold the Sindar accountable for their wrongdoings too.
