Chapter Three- TSS
Previous chapter, here; master post, here
Janis centric- TW- none
"Okay, great, you're a study group," Gretchen says. "And we couldn't know this information, why?"
"We didn't just study." I laughed.
"We heard a lot of Regina bitching." Aaron says.
"So, nothing new when talking to Regina." Cady grinned.
They met every week when the English teacher should be staying after. Aaron was right, this whole mutual needs thing really helped because soon the whole group was passing again.
But they never stopped showing up to English after school.
They never texted to confirm that they'd meet up, they all just did. Every week, in the empty English classroom. For almost a month.
It's where they were now, sitting in the quiet classroom. Regina was mumbling homework explanations to Aaron while Janis doodled on Regina's homework.
"Oh," Aaron said suddenly. "I get it now."
"Took you long enough," Regina grumbled. "Janis, what are you doing?!"
"Art." The girl said without looking up.
"Well, it's pretty but not on my homework." Regina said.
Janis could tell Regina was trying harder to be a better person. But four weeks of being nice won't erase four years or harassment.
Still, Janis found herself dangerously trusting the blonde more and more. She was yet to tell Damian or Cady about this new development happening in the tiny part of the school.
"Can I ask you two for advice?" Regina asked suddenly.
"Huh?" Aaron and Janis said at the same time.
"You can't tell a soul," Regina said. "Not even Damian." She shot a glare at Janis who raised her hands in defense.
"No guarantee, it depends what it is."
"I'm serious."
"Okay." Janis says slowly. She's never seen Regina this uncomfortable, this vulnerable, this- emotional before.
Regina got up and shut the classroom door.
"Well, now I feel like I'm about to get murdered." Janis half joked.
Regina sat back down at their cluster of desks. "So, I'm- uh." She fidgeted with her hands, avoiding eye contact.
Aaron and Janis looked at each other, confused.
"I suck with emotions." Regina sighed.
"That is very clear, yeah." Janis teased, earning a glare from the girl.
"I just- I'm the HBIC, everyone listens to me and I don't have to worry about anything but-"
"But?" Aaron probed.
"I dunno, you'll think I'm stupid."
Janis crossed her arms, leaning back in her chair. "I think this is stupid."
Regina shook her arms, like trying to shake out nerves. "Shane Omen is just really touchy and always gets super close and he just- blegh I hate it I would wish he didn't."
Janis nodded. "No, see I actually understand."
Regina looked up. "Yeah but he's openly rude to you. He's sickenly sweet to me and he acts like everyone's dream boy around Gretchen and Karen so I can't tell them about it."
"But aren't you always with Karen and Gretchen?" Aaron asks. "When does Shane have time to act this way?"
"I'm not like Janis," Regina deadpanned, ignoring the scoff from the girl next to her. "I'm not always with my giants. I'm fucking Regina George, the whole school respects me I shouldn't have to be scared of a stupid jock."
Janis reached over to rub Regina's arm. "You're not the only one who feels that way. Yeah, you're fucking Regina George, and the whole school respects you. Guess what? Regina George is allowed to have emotions too."
Aaron nods. "I think we all get scared of Shane Omen sometimes."
"A lot of times," Janis adds.
Regina nods. "Right. Sorry for-" She motions to herself. "This."
Janis snorts. "Sorry, sorry, that's not funny just-" She tries to calm her outbursts. "That sounded way to familiar."
"Well," Aaron says slowly. "You okay Janis?"
Trying to suppress the laughter only made her face bright red. "Yeah," She exhales. "I just felt like I was having an out of body experience. I swear I've said those same fucking words to Damian at least once a week."
"I don't know whether to be reassured that I'm not alone, or concerned for you." Regina says.
"Looks like we all have a bit more than English issues to work out." Aaron mumbles.
"Yeah," Janis glanced at the clock. "But we can unpack my trama another week. Damian's probably waiting for me."
"Just-" Regina stood up quickly as Janis made her way over to the door. "Don't tell anyone. I'm not weak or anything I swear."
"Emotions don't make you weak," Aaron stated.
"Janis, please." Regina ignored the boy, concentrating only on the girl at the door.
"I won't tell a soul Regina," Janis said, putting her hand on her heart. "But I do have to go."
She could hear Regina and Aaron continue to talk as she walked away. It felt weird, to hold this information. Even in eighth grade, Regina would rather fall off a table then deal with her emotions.
To have her open up to Janis and Aaron like that, even in the smallest admission of fear, it was big.
She approaches the tiny pick up zone, grinning to Damian as he looked up from his phone.
"Why hello there." Janis held her arms out, the universal 'pick me up' sign, to which Damian complied. He scooped her up, letting her fall into the palm of his hand as he brought the other one up to cup around her as well.
"So, Jan." He said as he began walking. "How was English help?"
"Good." Janis nodded. She felt bad about lying to Damian, but it technically was English help, just, without the teacher. English self-help.
"Was it good? Because I saw your English teacher leave school."
Well shit.
Damian didn't sound mad, or annoyed. if anything he sounded like he was teasing Janis.
"So, were you really at help?"
"Well," Janis crossed her arms. "I was technically in the English classroom, getting help for English. There was just no teacher."
"Oh?" Damian brought Janis to his shoulder to free his hands as he made his way outside and to his car.
Janis shrugged. "It's a group of students who got tired of the teacher never staying after so we're helping each other."
"Who makes up this group of students?"
Janis shrugged. She didn't want to share too much and then accidentally spill Regina's 'secret'. Overshare was not uncommon when talking with Damian. He definitely knew something was up because of how secretive Janis was being.
"Is Regina there?" Damian grinned knowingly as they reached his car.
How did he know?!
"She's been acting a lot nicer to us, I figured something was up."
As Damian sat down in the car, Janis slipped into his jacket pocket as normal. It was safer is Damian had to stop short.
"Yeah, Regina is there."
"Y'know, at first I thought you two were hooking up or something."
Janis made a face.
"Can you blame me?"
"Yes."
"Jan, you two have spent the past four years of your lives hating each other. What changed so suddenly?"
"Well," Here was where the oversharing got tricky. "She apologized."
"And you believe her?" Damian glanced down at Janis. The girl knew he wouldn't be open to the idea at first, hell, she wasn't either.
"Not initially. She's trying to be better though. I think I'm slowly starting to take it seriously."
Damian just nodded. "Don't get hurt."
"I try my best."
"Who could have guessed it was so hard for someone to open up?" I joke.
"Janis you literally don't get to talk." Regina scoffed.
"It's a bitch to get her to open up." Damian said, leaning back in his chair.
"Who's side are you on?" I yell.
"It took a full ass breakdown to get Janis to open up. Regina has nothing on her." Aaron said.

Chapter One-TSS
Previous chapter, here; Masterpost; here
Janis-centric, TW: none yet
"Janis you start the story." Regina said. The library was beginning to empty out as it got later in the day and we didn't wanna have to cut the story short because it closed.
"I had a very love-hate relationship with my tiny classes. It felt nice to be able to sit at a desk in a classroom with people of the same size, but I didn't know many people in the class. And the people I did know, well- it wasn't because we had the best relationship." I start.
"But who could have known all this would come from seating charts?" Aaron said, laughing like it was some inside joke.
Seating charts.
There had to be fucking seating charts.
Our teacher left on medical leave yesterday and Janis already hated her replacement.
Why seating charts?
Normally Janis sat in the back, alone at a desk meant for two people. But now she was seated in the middle of the classroom, next to Aaron Samuels.
Which, isn't bad.
But Regina George is placed right behind her.
Janis could already feel a ghost pen jab into her back.
I guess I can add global studies onto the list of classes I'll get in trouble for skipping a lot. She thought glumly.
The bell rings, and Janis sits in her seat regardless. It's a tiny class, so it's a small group, maybe twelve of them. Janis doesn't turn around to count though, not with Regina right behind her.
"Janis." Aaron whispers. "Do you have a pencil?"
She nods, silently passing him one.
"Thanks."
"No problem."
The teacher begins her lesson, talking about how she's the new long term sub and the class will have to listen to her if they want this course to go by smoothly.
Basic stuff.
The period drags on, with minimal disruption from Regina.
Well, actually- no disruption from Regina.
Janis almost wanted to run around and make sure she was indeed sitting in front of Regina George.
When the bell rang, Janis scooped up her backpack and made sure to be one of the first out of the classroom, trying to avoid as much interaction with her peers as possible.
Damian, as always, had beaten her to the landing, a smile finding its way onto his face when he saw her.
"Hey!" Janis said, pushing herself onto Damian's hand.
"How's your new teacher?" Damian asks, lifting his hand to his shoulder for Janis to hop on.
"She gave us assigned seating." Janis groaned.
"Is that your class with Regina?"
"They all have Regina."
Northshore's tiny population was- well, tiny. Her classes that weren't co-sized consisted of the same students, all in her grade, the only exception being upperclassmen who maybe failed a class.
Damian laughed, his shoulder shaking ever so slightly. "New question, do you sit near Regina?"
"Infront of her." Janis said glumly.
Damian tsked. "Poor baby."
"I'm not a baby."
"No, I'm feeling bad for Regina, you a nuisance to sit by in class." Damian teased. "You can't sit still if you're life depended on it."
"Hey!" Janis hit the shoulder underneath her playfully, making Damian laugh again.
They made it to their last class of the day, laughing about anything and everything.
"Oh, Damian?" Janis said suddenly remembered she had to stay after. "You don't gotta drive me home, I'm staying for extra help in English."
It was the tiny class she skipped the most, and the consequences were started to pile up.
Damian shook his head as he placed Janis on his desk. "I'll wait after. Don't want you to have to take the tiny bus."
The tiny bus was, as the name would suggest, the mode of transportation for tinies. It was a last resort for most because it took so long. It took backroads to avoid giant areas of town and overall just took longer to travel the same distance as a normal bus would.
"You sure?" Janis asked. "It's safe, it just takes a while."
Damian nodded. "I'm positive."
Janis eyed him, not because she didn't believe him, but she didn't wanna get in the way. Damian recognized the look and shook his head.
"I've made up my mind, Janis."
"But you don't have too-"
"Janis."
Any protest Janis had was cut off when the bell ring. Damian rested his forearm on the desk as the teacher passed out papers for both sizes. Janis leaned back, feeling Damian's jacket against her back. It was a small comfort to know he was right there, one Janis isn't even sure Damian knew he brought her.
The period drifts by slowly. Worksheets were Janis's least favorite thing to do. The packet never seems to grow smaller no matter how many pages Janis turned. The work wasn't hard, just plentiful.
She sighed, leaning back further to look up at Damian. He had earbuds in, working diligently on his own packet. They made eye contact and Damian raised his eyebrow but didn't say anything, just going back to work.
Janis figured she should do the same, turning back to her packet to try and get as little homework as possible.
When the class ended, Damin dropped Janis back off at the tiny landing with a promise of returning in an hour. Janis still felt bad about making him stay later, but Damian insists its not a big deal.
She makes her way through the 'halls' to her English classroom, freezing when shes see Regina and Aaron sitting there, with no teacher.
"Is she-" Janis motioned to the empty desk upfront.
"Ninty nine percent sure she bailed." Regina snarks, typing away on her phone.
Janis nods, but walks into the classroom anyway, taking a seat in the back. She can wait a bit.
"Oh, Janis!" Aaron says suddenly, getting up from his seat across the room and walking over. When he's a few feet away he tosses her a pencil. "Never gave this back to you."
"Oh," Janis says, twirling it in her fingers. She hadn't expected it back, to be honest, most of the time when you hand a pencil off you'll never see it again. "Thanks."
"Of course." Aaron nods, sitting back at his desk.
Janis was never close to Aaron. He started dating Regina long after the locker incident. He never went out of his way to harass her and she never went out of her way to talk to him. He didn't seem that bad of a guy and Cady seemed intent on befriending him. Janis always assumed preppy rich boy who dated Regina meant bad news, but maybe not?
Regina stood up her chair suddenly. "Whatever losers, if this teacher is a no show I'm going home."
"You won't be missed." Janis mumbles. Aaron chuckles and Regina either ignored her or didn't hear it. The plastic stalks out of the room and Janis scoops up her bag too. "I don't wanna be here longer then I have to be."
Aaron nods. "Bye then."
"And that was that." I say, looking at our friends.
Gretchen makes a face. "That's what set in motion weekly hangouts that were private? Top secret we can never tell?"
Regina nods. "Technically. There is a lot more in play as you'll see, but if Janis didn't share that pencil, where would we be right now?"
"Probably not in the giant library telling out story." Aaron remarks.
"Okay, you two," I say. I'm sitting in between them and I don't wanna get caught in the middle of a battle. "I'm gonna continue."

Chapter Two- TSS
Previous chapter, here; Master post, here Regina-centric, TW: extremely mild blood mention
"We probably would have been friends a lot sooner if Janis was more trusting and Regina stopped feigning indifferent," Aaron said.
Janis scoffed. "Do you blame me?"
"No," Aaron says shaking his head. "But my point still stands."
"I want to tell the next part of the story. Janis is gonna be biased." I say.
"Jains? Biased? No." Damian laughs.
"Hey!"
Dying for 15 seconds is scary.
People tell about how they see god or how deceased relative says it's not their time and it all seems whimsical and heavenly.
Nobody mentions the fear.
Knowing you're gonna die. Not knowing you could wake up.
Regina doesn't remember much. One minute she was screaming at Cady, trying to ger her voice to travel to the tall girl. The next minute was pain, flashing lights, sirens, her own blood.
Regina shuddered at the memory as she walked down the hall. She was on a mission right now. Ever since Regina woke up in the hospital she was filled with a sense of gratitude which was slowly being replaced by guilt.
Its funny how getting brought back from the dead can show clarity to how fucked up you were in the past. Regina wanted to fix that.
It was her study hall period and she had hoped to talk with Janis, but the girl wasn't there.
This meant with Regina's luck she was with her giant friend, Damian and she wouldn't even get near her for the rest of the day.
If the tiny artist was with Cady she might have a chance, but it would still be slim.
Regina looked around the tiny halls anyway, determined to right her wrongs.
She knew she couldn't fix the years of trauma she caused, but she wanted to apologize. Janis truly was a good friend, it was Regina who fucked up the close bond they had.
The plastic turned down a hallway and froze to find Janis sitting against the wall drawing in her sketchbook.
It was so easy to think about apologizing, but now that she had the chance, all words seemed caught in her throat.
She opted to silently walking over, sliding down the wall across from the girl.
"Hey." Regina said softly.
Janis looked up, clearly not pleased to see her there. "You should be in class. Leave me alone."
"You should be in class too," Regina said. There was an edge to her voice she was trying very hard to keep down. She didn't want to get defensive. "I wanted to talk."
"I'm not in the mood, Regina." Janis went back to drawing in her sketchbook. Regina knew this wouldn't be easy, but she had expected Janis to at least hear her out.
"I'm sorry."
Janis looked up with obvious disbelief. "Uh-huh."
"I'm serious, Janis." Regina turned her palms up, holding her hands out in defense. "What I did was so fucked up, and I can look back now are see that. And I'm not even talking about the years of bullying and hell I put you through."
To Regina's relief, Janis closed her sketchbook, looking closely at the girl in front of her. Her eyes trailed around Regina's face as if looking for any sign of a prank. When she decided Regina was in the clear she spoke. "Continue."
"I was scared. I know its no excuse. People started rumors that we were dating and- I thought maybe if I threw you under the bus and stopped talking to you the finger wouldn't be pointed to me-"
"And it worked." Janis cut in. Her voice was low, mixed equally with hurt and disinterest. It was a tone Regina recognized using herself all too much. The I-care-and-I'm-ready-to-cry-but-not-around-you voice.
"It worked," Regina repeated softly. "But at an awful cost. You were my best friend Janis. I was terrified. When I saw that I was in the clear- I couldn't stop. I needed to make sure I stayed in that clear. And it was so wrong of me. I'm fully aware a thousand apologies can't change my past actions. But I want to change to make my future actions better."
"Are you changing for me or for you?" Janis asked pointedly.
"What?"
"Sounds to me like you have a guilty conscious to clear. I don't think you're actually sorry for me."
"Janis-"
"No, Regina." Janis cut her off. "Not only did you out me to the school, but you also outed me to me. I wasn't even sure of myself yet. I didn't get to make my own decisions on when I came out to people because it was made for me before I even knew my own sexuality. I bet you didn't think of that. Yeah, you're right, the bullying and the homophobic slurs where a shitty touch, but don't pretend like you know what I went through." Her voice while started angrily, was straight-up venomous by the end. "I don't know what you earn from fucking with my feelings with a fake apology, but I'd appreciate if you stopped."
"The apology wasn't fake." Regina said softly.
"Okay, then what were you hoping to selfish earn from it."
"Nothing," Regina said. And it was honest. "I died Janis. I've been given a second shot at life. I'm not overly religious but I do think it's a chance to fix the awful fucking mistakes I made. I truly feel so fucking bad. I am one hundred percent aware that I have no right to ask for your forgiveness. And I'm not. All I'm asking is that you actually think about my apology. I do want to fix things."
Janis was quiet for a moment, staring at the hallway floor beneath them. "Sure." She said finally. She shoved her sketchbook into her backpack before looking at Regina. "I still don't trust you and would rather you stayed away though."
Regina nodded. "I understand."
The bell rang, causing them both to jump.
Had they really been sitting here for so long?
Janis mumbled something that could have equally been a goodbye or a fuck off.
.
Regina knew she had a lot of work cut out for her. She also knew it was very likely she would never be Janis's friend again. Even if Janis forgave her, her giant friend definitely seemed like the overprotective type. Not that Regina could blame him, she had given him every reason to be in the past. Regina swung her bag over her shoulder, walking to the tiny pick up the zone with a new sense of purpose.
.
Her first opportunity to prove herself came not ever three days later while walking through the giant halls with Gretchen and Karen. They were walking slowly, taking in the halls. Regina almost didn't hear it over the buzz of the hallways, but there was no way to miss the cocky tone owned by none other than Shane Omen.
"Wait." Regina said, tugging a strand of Karen's hair. The blonde immediately stopped. Regina turned to where Shane stood in front of Damian who was protectively holding Janis close to him.
"Hey, Shane?" Regina called, snapping the bully out of whatever homophobic insult rant he was on. "Please shut the fuck up. You're presence is giving me hives."
Shane looked like he wanted to retort something, but Regina placed her hands on her hips, a typical challenge of power for her. She was the queen of this school and Shane wasn't dumb enough to try and pull something.
"Whatever." He said before stalking away.
Regina eyed Janis and Damian for a moment, watching them both visibly relax. She made eye contact with Janis but didn't say anything to the artist.
"Okay," She said, tearing her gaze of the girl and facing forward again. "We can head to class."
.
It was a small action, yeah, but it was something she never went out of her way to do before. It was something she should have done a long time ago. And she knew Janis could recognize she tried from the look on her face that day.
.
It was a week since she last tried for English after school help. Regina wasn't one to stay after for classes, but she needed to turn her grades around fast. But when she walked into the room to see Janis and Aaron sitting at opposite ends of the room and no teacher, she groaned.
"Are you kidding me?"
" 'fraid not," Janis said, not even looking up from her sketchbook.
Aaron just shook his head with disappointment. "I gotta pass this class but I can't do it if the teacher doesn't stick to her word."
"Glad it's not just me," Janis says looking up.
"Oh please, book smart award-winning artist cant do English?" Regina snarked, rolling her eyes before catching herself. "Sorry." She added in quickly.
Aaron's eyebrows raised like he's never heard a genuine apology from Regina before.
Probably not.
"I'm failing from skipping so much if you must know everything," Janis said tensely.
"Okay," Aaron lifted his hands out, trying to defuse a quickly heating situation. "We're all in the same boat, why don't we study together?"
Regina and Janis stared at each other momentarily before shrugging.
"Sure." Janis got up, moving to a desk closer to the center of the room, Aaron doing the same. Regina sat down as well, pulling out her notes.
"So, Janis is failing because she doesn't come to class, I'm failing because I can't be bothered to do the work, and Aaron is failing because he doesn't understand it. How are we supposed to help each other?"
"Mutual needs," Aaron says. "I need you to to help me understand, Janis needs to go to class in order to explain to me, and you need to do the work to help as well."
"Sound like you get more out of this than us, but sure soccer boy," Janis said, but she grinned despite the insult. "So what are we learning about right now?" She started.
.
"The teacher never showed up if you were wondering," I say.
"None of us were surprised though." Janis shook her head. "She skipped class more then I did."
"And that's probably saying something." Cady laughed.
