I think we should put more stock into the idea of like. Tiny vampires. Vampires as big as your hand. They can drink their fill of blood and not kill anybody. Tiny bat form size of bumblebee. Small pointy guy that lives in your house. How you gonna stick a stake through that? You can’t he’s too small you’ll miss

A notification popped up on Jack’s phone, and it was about his doorbell.

“Pizza is already here?? That was bloody quick.”

But when he looked at the image, he did not see any sort of pizza nor delivery man. Instead it was a bunch of little faces and glowing eyes. Tiny vampires, and a great deal of them.

“Oh bugger…” He nudges the door open and poked his head out.

They covered his porch, stairs, lawn and driveway. His car was barely recognizable as a vehicle, and there was a calm in the air, peppered by the occasional squeak or churring.

Jack closes the door and locks it, stepping backwards in great strides and going to every window to shut the curtains. Lined up all around them in neat single rows, were more of the beasties.

“Hector, Hector my good man I have a problem. A little problem that is actually quite large. Get yer most robust butterfly net and park down the street. Tell the whole gang. I need all the help I can get!”

Barbossa snorted at Jack’s deliberately quiet tones, until he saw the picture.

“Did you feed a few of them earlier, Jack?”

“Might have. A couple days ago, left some treats out. Why’d you ask?”

Jack can hear the facepalm and Barbossa mumbles insults and curses.

“Those were the scouts for the colony! You know that huge gathering of the wee devils hikers had found the other day? At a park not too far from yer house?”

“Ohhhhh, right! Oh dear.”

It takes the gang an entire day to remove the vampires, and another to find the ones that are especially good at hiding.

Jack finds one under his hair after getting into his car later. It perches on the steering wheel, cleaning claws and stretching a wing.

“Stowaway! This is why I’m a werewolf person.”

Tinies that have been abandoned and discarded by human caretakers, form closely knit colonies and will bond with the homeless.

Though, tiny! vampires could be considered the exception in terms of domestication. Pocket sized companions content to cuddle. Though, some remain sentient and the humans are primarily their caretakers rather than owners.

How would a Tiny! react to someone using a vacuum as the person cleans the house?

They would be terrified! Loud noise, potential to get sucked up by the machine. Tiny vampires hide when the horrid metal monster comes rolling through the house!

DOI: 10.1098/rspb.2016.0221) Ever since the first cells evolved about 3.8 billion years ago, they have had to contend with other life forms intent on killing them. Today, wherever cells exist, viruses exist. It is likely this relationship goes back to time immemorial.

Viruses weren’t the only threat to other life forms on the early Earth. The very first predators were probably bacteria that preyed upon other bacteria (PDF). Bdellovibrio, for example, is a modern-day bacterium that invades other bacteria and eats them from the inside. (“Bdello” is derived from the Greek word for “leech” and “vibrio” describes its curved shape.) Eventually, more complex cells called eukaryotes — the same type of cells of which plants, animals, fungi, and protists are made — evolved, and they, too, fed upon bacteria.

And, as you might expect, the hunter also became the hunted. Eukaryotes that devoured other eukaryotes evolved at some point, but the exact timing is not known.

To clarify this issue, Susannah Porter of the University of California-Santa Barbara examined evidence of “vampire-like” behavior in 740-780-million-year-old fossils of protists (single-celled eukaryotes) found in the Grand Canyon. Her findings were published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

Some protists produce walls, and after the protists die, the walls can become fossilized. (The walls, also called “tests,” can be quite beautiful.) Curiously, Dr. Porter noticed that the fossils she examined contained strange micrometer-sized holes. (See photo above.)

After ruling out other potential explanations (e.g., specialized cell wall pores, mineral perforation, and degradation), she concluded that the holes are best explained as drill holes created by predatory protists seeking to slurp out whatever was inside the shell. Similar to Bdellovibrio, some of these protists physically crawl inside the shell and eat the protist from within. Vampyrellidae, a modern-day family of protists, behaves in just this manner.

The natural history of our planet, therefore, shows that microorganisms were vampires long before Twilight made it cool be a vampire.
