Sūn Wùkōng in the original book does a lot of spontaneous magic stuff that (as far as we know, given my wife hasn't gotten all the way through the books yet) doesn't get brought up again but is fun to lmk-ify or already has been by the show, just slyly.
For example: in the books, the staff can just. Unlock things. There's one time Wùkōng points his staff at a locked door, and it unlocks. This never comes up again, and the concept is kind of dull and op but like, not op in a fun way.
But the show. Oh. The show decided to be clever about this.
Something I noticed that I haven't been able to make a post about yet is the role the staff has in season three. LBD needs it for her mech, but it's the last thing she collects- when she terrorizes MK on the desert outskirts.
Which is after she adds all ingredients minus the lantern to the magic soup, which means the staff isn't needed to make the mech, so why does she need it?
Well, if you look, the mech is chained down when it forms, implying that she's successfully rebuilt it, but that she can't use it. Someone seems to have gone to extra lengths to make sure that even if she reformed this thing, she wouldn't be able to do anything with it.
... Until she yoinks the staff, that is, and when she does and Wùkōng takes MK and flees?
She turns around and holds the staff out to the mech and the chains shatter.
Meaning in the lmk universe the staff does indeed still unlock things. It just removes enchantments instead of dealing with physical locks.
(I love this show.)
Ooohhhh that's COOL omg
