“They deserve the opportunity,” Solas repeats. “It serves us best to be hopeful.” “Hopeful. You used to tell good jokes.”  Solas laughs. A real laugh, carried beyond the push of air through his nose, though it does begin with the snort. “They hate that joke, too. They always have.”

R: Ritual lends faith, lends belief, lends power.

D: “Did you see your gifts?” Adahlen asks, fingers tugging and pulling. She is careful. Not a single braid snags beneath her attention.

L: “Lethallen,” he says, greeting them with endearment. There is a faint measure of reproach in his tone, though they don’t waste breath speculating on what they’ve done to displease him.

Silver Linings - Aeducan x Gorim reunion fic. This is a rewrite of one of the first fics I EVER wrote and I'm really glad to have revisited it. Exploring Tam's relationship with surface luxuries like flowers and encountering them in their natural place was really interesting to me, as was her first (and enduring) experience with rain. It's also a place where I got to consider the intricacies of speaking a language (Common having been canonically derived from a dwarven language) without having a solid grasp of widely used idioms. Using the language of her people that has, largely, been overtaken by others and giving it new meaning was just. Interesting to me.

A Body to Live In - Miolvun genfic. This piece was written for the Trans Thedas Event and I got to explore a lot of my own experiences with body dysphoria through a unique lens. Miolvun being among the first of their people and seeking solutions and like-souls in a time when ALL bodies were new was something I found really cathartic.

The Forgetting - Miolvun whump. When I first started conceptualizing Mio as a character I knew I wanted them to have ties to the Forgotten Ones. Finally sitting down to explore how to define that (and what it means to them and their story) was an exercise in examining both trauma and memory loss. I wanted to make certain that memory loss wasn't the blessing it could have been (forgetting the trauma of an abusive upbringing doesn't actually lend them anything like peace). It's complicated and messy and a trauma all its own.

Reckless Abandon - Felassan x Mio. I think this may have been, if not the first then one of the very first smut pieces I attempted. I think I mentioned to Tas it might be an interesting ship and she said "Yeah I can see it" and I wholly lost my mind about it.

Var Shiral'vhen: Chapter 12 - Throwing Apples Ian is a good teacher genfic chapter. This was SO fun to write. As a teacher myself I put a lot of thought into making certain my kids get to scaffold their learning and reinforce it with world-relevant examples, as well as getting to put their hands ON their learning. Making the lesson about magic and trying to design something that would engage multiple levels of learners (he's got apprentices from age 13 to 19) was also fun.

An excerpt from a future chapter of Tomorrow's Dream, book 1 of my Elvhenan Rebellion Era fic, Promise Me the Stars, in which Miraen has to answer to Mythal for some mischief involving their new brother Justice and a bottle of poisoned wine.

The metal of their golden mask bites their temples as they kneel. Polished tile bruises their knees, and they keep their eyes on the spread of their fingers, their palms flat against the floor.

Beside them, Arthas is no more comfortable than they. Worse, perhaps, or less inclined to abide. He fidgets, fingers curling and uncurling, breath stuttering on every third inhale. 

She makes them wait. 

They kneel in silence, bear the weight of her displeasure. Her First and her Sixth, called to her throne in the earliest hours of the day and still kneeling as the sun climbs the sky. 

Miraen’s headache climbs with it, the drumming between their ears growing in cadence until they almost wonder if their crown will split. 

They close their eyes. 

“Explain.” Mythal fills the command with compulsion, and Miraen's mouth opens.

Justice speaks first. 

“It was an accident.” 

Miraen closes their mouth. 

“An accident.” Mythal's echo is unimpressed. Miraen can hardly blame her. As excuses go, it is the poorest he might offer. Childish and unprepared. Their brother is not suited for the intricacies of deception, lacks the finesse to carry out the clumsy plan he had contrived, and it shows more now than it had in the careless drip of wax. 

“The poison was meant for–”

“Is that supposed to please me?” Mythal does not allow him to finish the claim. Whether she believes it or not matters little. He had not acted with her blessing. She does not want Solas dead. Her anger sears through the room until Justice chokes with it, head tilting closer to his knuckles as he bows beneath its weight.
