I was just thinking about this, actually. But more in the context of ‘why do I feel so guilty for calling into work because I need to take care of myself?’ Especially since the last time I called in was almost 3 years ago….
Yeah! I feel like a large part of it has to do with how our culture is like reward based and doesn’t currently value taking care of people. Like work work work, no paid leave/vacation for a lot of jobs and they make it feel like you can be easily replaced. So you should pander to them so they dont get rid of you. Like they don’t value prevention so it feels like the only excuse you have to not come in is being too sick to get out of bed, etc.
Esp. When u grow up as an A+ kid who put their worth in their grades and self confidence in a merit based system. Based solely on putting your worth in other people’s hands.
And then we grow up and get burnt out, because ppl older than us don’t understand the huge workload we have compared to prev. generations. or mental stress we’re under. So because of how some treat us we feel like we shouldn’t be struggling and that everything should be easy because it was easier for our parents etc. (or supposedly easier for another person our age we know)
So then we feel like something is wrong with us like we’re ‘behind’ or incapable of _____ or something.
So we have to like, learn how to value ourselves when we aren’t working/being useful to someone, and live at a normal human pace.
I forgot to tell you that I watched Frank a couple weeks ago because of you. And it was AMAZING. I'm sad I waited so long to watch it, honestly.

That sounds awful… I hope your sister is okay, and that she will be okay tomorrow. (I also wouldn’t mind having all those facts on hand as well).
It could be way worse. We are white. So you know, none of us are in any direct danger of harm nor do we have to deal with micro aggressions or overt racism.

There's also usage royalties to look into, after the cost of doing the actual design. That's not something I have experience with though.
I know the client, and I know what they're using it for. And it isn't commercial based, so for now I'm not charging for royalties.

I think the best way to do it would be to charge based on hourly work. But you have to already know about how long it will take you, since I would charge before starting the logos. I know a graphic designer who charges $70/hour.
Initially I thought I would go along with those lines...but I completed all four logos in under an hour, so I simply went with a flat rate of $50 per logo.
